قد أنْعَلُوهُ بالرياحِ الأربعِ
O giver of the swift, noble steed, it is as though
O guide of the generous gaze, as if
they have shod it with the four winds.
They shod him with the four winds.

Like a kindled blaze, or like the rain
Like a swift, well-trained steed, or like pouring rain,
poured down, or like a darting sparrowhawk.
Or like a darting arrow let loose.

Nothing is swifter than it except my thought
Nothing is swifter than him except my thoughts
in gratitude for your gift of such great import.
In gratitude for your great, exalted gift.

And were I to do it justice in honoring it,
If I were just in praising his majesty,
for the greatness of its magnanimous, splendid giver,
For the majesty of his noble, splendid guide,

وجعلتُ مربطَهُ سوادَ المدمعِ
I would feed it the grain of my heart for love of it,
I would pledge the love of my heart for his love,
and make the black of my eye its tethering place,
And make his tether the darkness of my tears.

and strip off, then cut up, without stinting,
Without hesitation I would give and cut
the mantle of youth for its horsecloth and face-veil.
The cloak of my youth for his glory and veil.
