    If literature benefits anyone

And raises him to the highest ranks,

I have indeed lost on it what

I inherited from mother and father.

    How many estates once shielded

My face from the humiliation of begging!

I squandered them—not on singing girls,

Nor for love of the grape’s daughter,

    But on mishaps and needs,

    And calamities and adversities.

How often I said, when I sold them

And found myself captive to anguish:

    Gone is our hen, which

Used to lay gold for us!
