أقولُ لدهرٍ وهو يخفِضُ رُتْبتي

أقولُ لدهرٍ وهو يخفِضُ رُتْبتي

ويُنحي على مالي ويخلِفُ تأميلي

I say to Time as it lowers my rank,

I say to time as it lowers my status,

and assails my wealth and disappoints my hopes:

And acts upon my money, leaving my hopes behind,

أيا حجراً صلداً مُنِيتُ ببخلِهِ

أيا حجراً صلداً مُنِيتُ ببخلِهِ

فلا هو يوريني ولا هو يوري لي

فلا هو يوريني ولا هو يوري لي

O hard stone, whose stinginess I am afflicted with—

O solid rock, my hopes have withered due to its stinginess,

so it neither consumes me nor kindles a fire for me.

It shows me neither mercy, nor sympathy.
