O, O you whose glory is a white blaze on Time’s brow,

    and whose countenance is the joy of sovereignty’s eye;

and serving you is a firestick for honor’s flame,

and your presence is the navel of Glory’s body.

And O you whose renown, like your name, never

ceases to travel on the finest journey.

You have gathered the world’s beauties, just as you have

cast the beauties of letters into an ingot.

And you have gained all the distinctive qualities of leaders,

and amassed good fortunes before you in a heap.

And since Time was too small to clothe you,

you cut from it a vest for your glory’s body.

And how many favors your servant has received from you—

lofty favors for which the servant cannot give due thanks!

And Time’s offense is grave; yet if it shows me

its beautiful face, I shall accept its excuse.

You have attained whatever wishes you desire,

so Time’s adversity has retracted its claw from you.

May your head be green each day,

and the cups above your hands be red.
