منwho ذاthis one الذيwho لاdoes not يُذِلُّsubdue الدهرُTime صعبَتَهُhis unruly mount
ولاand does not تُلينُsoften يدُthe hand of الأيامِthe days صَعْدَتَهُhis spear
Who is there whose unruly mount Time does not subdue,
and whose spear the hand of days does not soften?
أماdo ... not? ترىyou see خَلَفاًKhalaf شيخَelder of الملوكِthe kings غَداhas become
مملوكَthe slave of منthe one who فَتَحconquered العذراءَthe virgin بلدتَهُhis city
Do you not see that Khalaf, elder of kings, has become
the slave of him who conquered the virgin—his city?
قدindeed كانَhe was بالأمسِyesterday مَلكاًa king لاno نظيرَequal لهُto him
فاليومَand today فيin الأسْرِcaptivity لاnot ينتاشُrescues أُسرتَهُhis family
Only yesterday he was a king without equal;
and today, in captivity, he cannot rescue his family.
