Who will tell the dignitary, our lord Abu al-Hasan,

Musafir, an unravelled remnant of days and time [wording unclear]:

I have relieved my back of sorrow’s weight, just as

You weighed it down with splendid favors and gifts.

Your benefactions are grand among humankind, while

Your meanings are subtle in poetry and minds.

And verse has reached me that you have breathed forth,

Like magic, wine, and sweet basil bound together.

And may God reward you on behalf of a servant and protégé,

Who had been dead in the hands of anguish and sorrow,

Then lived through words from you that were to him

Like the soul returning from him to a body.
