يا بؤس من يمنى بدمع ساجم
يهميpours down علىupon حجبveils الفؤادthe heart الواجمgrief-stricken
يهمي على حجب الفؤاد الواجم
How wretched is one afflicted with streaming tears
Alas for one afflicted with streaming tears,
that rain down over the veils of his mute heart—
Pouring upon the veils of the grief-stricken heart,
لولاwere it not for تقلُّلهhis contentment with little بكاسيwith two cups of مُدامةwine
لولا تقلُّله بكاسي مُدامة
ورسائلand the letters of الصَّابيal-Sabi وشعرand the poetry of كشاجمKushajim
ورسائل الصَّابي وشعر كشاجم
were it not for his making do with two cups of wine,
But for his contentment with two cups of wine,
al-Ṣābiʾ’s epistles, and Kushājim’s verse.
And al-Sabi’s letters and Kushajim’s poetry.
