أنظرlook إلىat البدرِthe full moon فيin أسرِthe captivity of الكسوفthe eclipse بداappeared
أنظر إلى البدرِ في أسرِ الكسوف بدا
مستسلِماًsubmissive لقضاءto the decree of اللهِGod والقَدَرِand fate
مستسلِماً لقضاء اللهِ والقَدَرِ
Look at the full moon, appearing captive to the eclipse,
submissive to God's decree and to fate.
كأنَّهُas though it were وجهُthe face of معشوقٍa beloved أدلَّacted presumptuously علىtoward
كأنَّهُ وجهُ معشوقٍ أدلَّ على
عشاقِهِhis lovers فابتلاهُso He afflicted him اللهُGod بالشَّعَرِwith hair
عشاقِهِ فابتلاهُ اللهُ بالشَّعَرِ
As though it were the face of a beloved who acted presumptuously toward
his lovers, so God afflicted him with hair.
