ويومٍand a day عبيريperfume-scented النسيمِthe breeze سبىcaptivated طَرفيmy gaze
وقلبيand my heart بماby what أبدىit revealed منof الحسنِbeauty والظرفِand grace
And on a day whose breeze breathed ambergris, it enthralled my eye
And a day with a perfumed breeze captivated my gaze
and my heart with all the beauty and grace it displayed.
and my heart with the beauty and grace it revealed.
كأنَّas though موشىthe brocade الغيمِof the clouds فيهِin it مقابلاًfacing

It seemed to me the cloud’s brocade there stood facing
As though the clouds’ brocade there, facing
the brocade of the hills, while the sun peered through curtains:
the hills’ brocade, while the sun peered from behind a curtain,

the white breasts of falcons arrayed in ranks, confronting
were white falcons’ breasts, arrayed to face
the backs of peacocks too exquisite for description.
peacocks’ backs whose intricacy defies description.

Then, when the rain cloud’s downpour broke its necklace,
Then, when its knot loosened with the clouds’ downpour,
it came to slake the plants’ burning thirst—indeed, to heal it.
and it began quenching the plants’ thirst—nay, healing them—

Through it, in the garden, I beheld the loveliest sight,
I saw, through it, the loveliest sight in the garden,
proclaiming the handiwork of the All-Watchful, Lord of subtle grace:
attesting to the handiwork of the gracious Guardian:
فَحَلْيٌthus, jewelry بلاwithout صوغٍcrafting ونسجٌand weaving بلاwithout يدٍa hand
وضحكٌand laughter بلاwithout ثغرٍa mouth ودمعٌand tears بلاwithout طرفِan eye
ornaments fashioned by no goldsmith, and weaving wrought by no hand,
thus, jewelry without crafting, and weaving without a hand,
laughter with no mouth, and tears with no eye.
and laughter without a mouth, and tears without an eye.
