I have become a yearner, the constant companion of ardent longing,

I have come to yearn, a companion of ardent love,

For the letters of al-Ṣābiʾ, Abū Isḥāq—

for the letters of al-Ṣābī, Abū Isḥāq:

صوب البلاغة والحلاوة والحجى

صوب البلاغة والحلاوة والحجى

ذوب البراعة سلوة العشاق

ذوب البراعة سلوة العشاق

A downpour of eloquence, sweetness, and discernment,

a shower of eloquence, sweetness, and wisdom,

The very essence of artistry, the lovers’ solace.

the molten essence of brilliance, the solace of lovers.

طوراً كما رق النسيم وتارة

طوراً كما رق النسيم وتارة

يحكى لنا الاطواق في الاعناق

يحكى لنا الاطواق في الاعناق

At times as gentle as the tender breeze, and at others

At times as gentle as the breeze, and at others,

It conjures for us necklaces upon necks.

evoking for us necklaces around necks.

لا يبلغ البلغاء شأو مبرز

The eloquent cannot attain the reach of such a master,

The eloquent cannot reach the heights of a master

Whose marvels are inscribed upon the very eyes.
