غصصت وقد أربى على المر شهده

غصصت وقد أربى على المر شهده

A friend of ours—since I tasted his brotherly affection,

A friend of ours, since I tasted his brotherhood

I choked, for his honey surpassed bitterness itself.

I was choked, though he was raised on bitterness his nectar

فأضعف من نسج العناكب عهده

فأضعف من نسج العناكب عهده

وأضيع من نار الحباحب وده

وأضيع من نار الحباحب وده

So his pledge is weaker than spiders’ webs,

So his covenant is weaker than a spider's web

And his affection is more useless than al-Hubāhib’s fire.

And his love is more lost than a firefly's glow
