سِتْرُ الهوى بينَ الوَرَى مُنْتَهكْ
O lodestar of lovers, O you through whom
O lovers’ qibla, O you through whom
Love’s veil among all people is torn away—
the veil of love is torn among humankind.
جَرَّدْتَyou unsheathed منfrom عَيْنَيْكَyour two eyes سَيْفاًa sword فَلِمْthen why
جَرَّدْتَ من عَيْنَيْكَ سَيْفاً فَلِمْ
أغْمَدْتَهُyou sheathed it فيin قلبِthe heart عبدِAbd (servant of) الملِكْal-Malik (the King)
أغْمَدْتَهُ في قلبِ عبدِ الملِكْ
You drew from your eyes a sword; why, then,
You drew a sword from your eyes—then why
Did you sheath it in the heart of ʿAbd al-Malik?
did you sheathe it in the heart of Abd al-Malik?
