عركتني الأيامُ عَرْكَ الأديمِ
وتجاوَزْنَand they went beyond بيwith me مدىthe reach التقويمof straightening
وتجاوَزْنَ بي مدى التقويم
The days have rubbed me as leather is rubbed,
The days have worn me out like worn leather
and carried me beyond the reach of straightening;
And surpassed me beyond time's domain
وغضَضْنَand they lowered اللحاظَthe glances منِّيَfrom me إلاّexcept
وغضَضْنَ اللحاظَ منِّيَ إلاّ
عنfrom هلالa crescent moon يرنوgazes بمقلةِwith the eye of ريمِa gazelle
عن هلال يرنو بمقلةِ ريمِ
and turned my gaze away from all but
Lowering their gazes from me except
a crescent moon gazing with a gazelle's eye.
For a crescent moon glancing with the eye of a white antelope

His glance is sickness to every healthy heart;
Its glance is the sickness of every heart that's whole
his mouth is coolness to every ailing body.
Its mouth the coolness of every ailing body
