سَناradiance وجهface ذُهلDhuhl سَناradiance البدرthe full moon ذاكيbrightly glowing
سَنا وجه ذُهل سَنا البدر ذاكي
وأخلاقهand his character المسكmusk فوقabove المدَاركِthe powers of perception
وأخلاقه المسك فوق المدَاركِ
The radiance of Dhuhl's face is the full moon's brilliant glow.
The face of Duhl is radiant, like the shining full moon
And his character is musk beyond comprehension.
His character is musk, beyond comprehension
وآباءُand the forefathers of ذهلDhuhl منfrom الأزْدthe Azd قَومٌa people
وآباءُ ذهل من الأزْد قَومٌ
همُthey سمَكُواraised المجدglory فوقَabove السّماكِal-Simak, a star
همُ سمَكُوا المجد فوقَ السّماكِ
And Dhuhl's forefathers are a people of the Azd,
The fathers of Duhl are from the honorable tribe of Azd
Who raised glory above the star al-Simak.
They attained glory, higher than the heights
وشادواand they built up عُلاهمtheir eminence وذادواand they defended حماهمtheir protected domain
وشادوا عُلاهم وذادوا حماهم
بسمرwith tawny العواليthe long spears ودهمand jet-black المذاكىthe full-grown steeds
بسمر العوالي ودهم المذاكى
And they built up their eminence and defended their domain
They built their pride and protected their sanctuary
With long, tawny spears and jet-black, full-grown steeds.
With the heights of glory and the blood of sacrifice
وذهلand Dhuhl تجودbestow generously أياديthe favors of يديهِhis two hands
وذهل تجود أيادي يديهِ
لكلto every رهينcaptive إذاًthen بالفكاكِwith release
لكل رهين إذاً بالفكاكِ
And Dhuhl's hands bestow their bounty:
The hands of Duhl are generous
Release, then, to every captive,
Freeing every captive from bondage
وإعزازِand honoring جارٍa neighbor وإطلاقand freeing عانٍa prisoner
وإعزازِ جارٍ وإطلاق عانٍ
واعطاءِراجٍand giving to a hopeful petitioner وإِلجاءand sheltering شاكيone who complains
واعطاءِراجٍ وإِلجاء شاكي
And honor to a neighbor, and freedom to a prisoner,
Honoring neighbors and freeing the oppressed
And gifts to a hopeful petitioner, and refuge to one in distress.
Giving to those in need and sheltering the displaced
وكمand how many طالبa seeker فيin العُلىeminence شأوthe reach of ذُهلٍDhuhl
وكم طالب في العُلى شأو ذُهلٍ
وماyet not نالreached منof نعلِهhis sandal بالشّراكِeven the strap
وما نال من نعلِه بالشّراكِ
And how many have sought Dhuhl's rank in glory,
Many aspiring nobles covet Duhl’s prestige
Yet have not reached even the strap of his sandal!
But cannot attain even his shoe’s laces
أَباO father of حسنHasan عشتَmay you live فيin ظلّthe shade of ملكٍkingship
أَبا حسن عشتَ في ظلّ ملكٍ
وغالَand may it destroy عدوَّكyour enemy ريبُthe vicissitudes of الهَلاكِdoom
وغالَ عدوَّك ريبُ الهَلاكِ
O Abu Hasan, may you live in the shade of kingship,
Father of Hasan you lived in a king’s shade
And may doom's vicissitudes destroy your enemy.
While your enemy neared utter ruin
سبقتyou outpaced المُجاريthe fellow racer وطلّتand you rose above المساميthe rival in eminence
سبقت المُجاري وطلّت المسامي
وفتand you outstripped المباريthe competitor وفقتَand you surpassed المحاكيthe imitator
وفت المباري وفقتَ المحاكي
You outpaced the racer and towered above the rival in eminence,
You surpassed rivals, aimed for the heights
And outstripped the competitor and surpassed the imitator.
Opened closed doors, and excelled in every field
ومجدكَand your glory سامٍlofty وجدّكand your good fortune عالٍhigh
ومجدكَ سامٍ وجدّك عالٍ
وخيمكand your disposition صافٍpure وسعيكand your striving زاكيfruitful
وخيمك صافٍ وسعيك زاكي
And your glory is lofty, and your fortune high,
Your glory soared, your bounty overflowed
And your disposition is pure, and your striving fruitful.
Your resolve was firm, your efforts fruitful
وعاشواand may they live بِنوكyour sons وحازواand may they attain المعاليhigh honors
وعاشوا بِنوك وحازوا المعالي
بفضلthrough the excellence of اقتسامٍsharing out وحسنand the goodness of اشتراكِsharing together
بفضل اقتسامٍ وحسن اشتراكِ
And may your sons live and attain high honors
May your sons live on and achieve greatness
Through noble apportionment and fine fellowship.
Through sharing virtues and unity of purpose
