فإن مديح الشعر انفسها عِلقا
If one day noble deeds worth preserving are recalled,
When virtues are remembered, praise endures,
then praise in verse is their most precious treasure.
For the praise of poetry is worthless chatter.

And not every poem is like the one I utter;
No poem is like that which I recite,
but indeed, the best poetry is that which secures sustenance.
Except the best poem contains sustenance.

So its truest is that spoken of the best of his people,
The truest praises the best of his people,
and their noblest in deeds and finest in character:
And most generously acts and is most noble.

Chief of all Banu Nabhan—and all of them
The chief of the Bani Nabhan, most generous,
are kings; the sons of this world are their slaves in bondage.
Kings over people of the world, their slaves obeying them.

O Bani Umar through God's kindness,
has spread sustenance to everyone through your hands.
To each at your hands He gave ample sustenance.

So they sought wealth from none but Banu Umar,
None gained wealth except through Bani Umar
and found no roads except those leading to Samad.
And none found paths but those leading to Samad.

Your protection, in its might, is sought to ward off harm,
Your noble company alone averts harm,
and rain is sought from the lightning of your face.
And the radiance of your face revives the living.

Free of hardship or misery.
