فلَمّاthen when تغشّىcovered رأسهhis head الشّيْبُgray hair وَدّعاhe bade farewell
He enjoyed the first bloom of youth to the full;
Enjoy the pleasures of youth while you can
then, when gray hair covered his head, he bade farewell.
Before old age overtakes you and bids farewell

A nursling of youthful frolic in the cradle of youth,
An infant lies in the cradle of youth
he satisfied his desire for its diversions, then desisted.
Having had his fill of play, he weaned himself away

He had been lovesick, infatuated with full-breasted maidens,
In his youth, he was enamored with maidens
and remained seduced by idleness, passionately devoted to it.
And remained inclined towards idleness

He would visit the graceful, full-breasted maiden in her family's secluded chamber,
He would visit meadows at night when shepherds slept
when the evening companions nodded off at night into sleep.
When the guard called the sheep to rest

And he would visit the tribe's maidens as they emerged in the forenoon,
And he would visit the maidens of the neighborhood at dawn
delicate maidens wearing variegated jewelry.
Delicate beauties adorned in fine robes

And he would go out with the young men into youth's playground,
He would join the youths in the field of youth
sharing with them the diluted wine of the jars,
Sharing with them the scintillating water of life

when, before dawn, the dew opened the garden's blossoms,
When the meadow was saturated with dew at dawn
and the east wind's breaths touched it, so it breathed out fragrance.
And the morning breeze caressed it

Yet the union of love was continually beset by
Though devoted to pleasure, the bonds of love
the play of separation's hands, until it broke apart.
Continued to be shredded by the hands of separation

So do not marvel, you two, that I have sobered up: how often
So wonder not that I am awake
I savored pleasures in sight and sound!
For long I have immersed myself in pleasures visible and heard

And I sped through youth's course [text unclear]; then
And mounted the steeds of youth only to find myself
the mounts of our youthful frolic became exhausted and lame.
Riding slow camels when youth had passed

Though I was not found languid at parting,
And if wine has not left me sluggish
or slow, nor did I know an approach to the drinking companions,
Or made me accustomed to drinking at dawn

why, then, do I see no one to say to me, when good fortune comes,
Why does no one congratulate me in good times
‘May you enjoy it!’—nor, if a mishap meets me, ‘Rise again!’?
Or console me if misfortune befalls?

Any way back from the prime of youth?

Take from the sweetness of life while you are intoxicated by it
to joy, and leave me to forsake amusement altogether.
And it bids you leave pleasure altogether

As for me, I have woken up to find old age upon me
to fear for four ambitions at the hands of time:
And so avoid the pitfalls of fate

I seek hospitality for the guest and wounds for enemies,
I seek to host guests, linger with companions
crossing desert wastes, and richly jeweled verse.
Cut off long journeys, and gather fine pearls

And I praise the lords of the house of Ya'rub,
And I praise the noble lords of the clan of Ya'rub
all the sons of Umar, and thank them together.
The sons of Umar who walk the path of glory

To the standard of the Qahtan and Ya'rub
I made my way: indeed, I found a dwelling-place for glory.
I arrived and found a place for glory

And hands that know how to give at the right time
and two full moons of splendor [probable reading], who made the seat of honor their rising-place.

and they found them the most dew-rich and spacious abode.
