Would that their coldness, with nearness still between us,

had lasted! Yet why wish, now they have gone so far?

Our loved ones broke the covenant of faithfulness, nor

did distance reveal to us anything in them beyond their accustomed ways.

My lack of patience has defeated forbearance and driven

endurance from me, for I have no fortitude.

By your fortune, ever since they said, “Parting is tomorrow,”

I tremble whenever “tomorrow” is mentioned to me.

The departing caravans swept away my soul when they raised

those howdahs bearing gentle, bashful maidens:

each a slender, well-formed girl, for whom youth set swaying

a figure where coquetry and graceful languor dwelt.

They smile, revealing cool, gleaming teeth along their mouths,

    like fresh daisies and hailstones.

Do not rebuke one sick with burning love,

wearing fresh garments woven from youthful passion.

Thirsty and burning, were it not that before dawn

he cools himself over wine in its tavern,

when, just before morning, the air grows gentle for him,

and the tuneful cock of the predawn hour has sung,

in a garden whose blossoms are kohl-lined with tears

from its shade, and whose soil is sodden with dew.

And birds call from the branches, delighting us

with their voices, while water flows swiftly toward you.

Do not serve me wine in scant drops: my liver is

burning, for your cold heart has not cooled it.

And honor me with a freeborn youth to share my wine

in true companionship—though I doubt you will find one.

As for verses, I now compose them

from a mind ablaze with the brilliance of thought.

Were it not for modesty, which I believe is noble,

I would strut so proudly that the land could not contain me.

Noble deeds will be bereft of my praise's jewels [wording uncertain],

and noble deeds will be missed the day that I am missed.

If, when they heard the verse I have composed,

its recitation were called ancient poetry, they would bow down.

They marvel at my verses, yet are prevented

from acknowledging my excellence by resentment and envy.

Were it not for Nabhan, kings and sons of kings, I would imagine

that I had been sent into a world with no one in it.

I am certain that all mankind are the sons of Umar,

and all the earth their dwelling-place, Amad.

All of it is a council chamber, with a moon at its head,

and all of it a forest, with a lion in its lair.

The house of al-Anik and the sons of kings possess

preeminence in nobility, generosity, might, and numbers.

Among them is the lordly, gallant, generous Abu

    Abd al-Ilah, from whom gifts are hoped for;

and the awe-inspiring, daring warrior, lofty in ambition,

    Nabhan, firm of purpose, the daring and valiant;

and the man of noble character, whose bounty is hoped for,

Abu al-Husayn, when riders seeking bounty arrive.

Like rain clouds: most beneficial is the bulk of what they bestow,

given freely; and swiftest of all is the bestowal of their gifts.

They ride purebred, sleek steeds, wearied

amid battle-dust by leaping, routing, and pursuit.

They rend war's armor, and war leaves them

with splinters of spear shafts lodged in their bodies.

Their garments white, their color is veiled in greasy grime

on battle day, from what makes chainmail rust.

Each an awe-inspiring warrior, borne in battle

by a sleek mare, neither knock-kneed nor short in the forelegs.

Thus whoever seeks glory attains it:

the heart knows no ease until the body suffers.

By God, no foot has trodden the throne of eminence

unless a hand has stretched forth with benefactions.

    يهنيكمُ ويَسرّْ المالُ والْوَلَدُ

    May you endure for noble deeds, sons of Umar;

may wealth and children bring you joy and delight.

How often, between my praise of you and your kindness

to me, has a liver perished in its rage!

    واللهُ راقٍ وحظُّ الحاسدُ الْكَمَدُ

    May my praise and your kindness endure, for me and for you;

and God grants healing; the envier's lot is grief.
