The days of youth and the playgrounds of companions

Reawakened my old yearning and my weeping.

Then my tears welled up, tears whose

Concealment was banished by burning anguish.

Gray age weakened as the strength redoubled

Of longing, now filling my innermost being.

In the streaming of tears lies some of my healing.

Of delight among young wild cattle and gazelles!

And our willing submission to whatever passion decreed,

In playful love for the beautiful, budding-breasted maiden.

The sun rises for us at Akilla,

And the full moon shines within a tent.

The beauties ensnare us, and we ensnare them,

With the snares of youthful infatuations and passions.

And from the passion in my soul, my ears are filled

With deafness that shuts out well-wishers' reproach.

My answering drew me into diversions,

In obedience to desires, at every call.

I did not accept that from passion

Before my black locks turned white.

I had given it power—yet what did I have in passion

As a screen before me? So I turned to look behind.

And when I remembered loved ones and youth,

I restrained my eye from overflowing with tears.

And often a thought would cross my heart,

Of love; you said to it, 'Begone in shame!'

Toward beauties, I checked it with my cloak.
