وفاءً ويأبى القلبُ أَن يتَقلَّبا
You kept away, but the yearning lover will never withdraw,
I've avoided while the ardent cannot avoid
out of faithfulness; the heart refuses to change.
Being faithful, and the heart refuses to waver
وياand alas للهوىfor love لِلمُستهامfor one maddened with love فؤآدهُhis heart

And alas for love, for one whose heart is enthralled
Oh, for the passion of one whose inner self is enthralled by you!
by you: when you keep him far off, will you not bring him near?
When you're distant, won't you come closer?

My resolve is indeed overcome in love;
My resolve is overpowered by passion’s command
a lover is more apt to grow tender and be vanquished.
And the lover, foremost, is to softly languish, overruled

How many a proud man has humbled himself before his beloved,
How many a proud one has been humbled before his beloved!
and an unyielding man grown submissive to love's decrees.
And how the edicts of passion make the defiant yield!

Though after severity you see me, I'll show

Fingertips yellowed by the flames of tribulation

though an old man's loving is folly?
While age in an elder is but meet when he frosts?

And visit the tribe's courtyard, where their flock has appeared—
The living throng a meadow where gazelles grazed
maidens—and so hunt the well-nurtured gazelle [reading uncertain]?

And it ripens me with its coal-black hue [reading uncertain],
It wards me off with hot-tempered rough ones
its rose-red and hoary white.
Ruddy, roseate and white-templed I've grown

With the youths I sally to hunt for delight
to hunt joy through diversion and rejoice?

The zephyrs knit it assorted aged garb
the east wind ripples its breaths over it in the predawn hours,
And for it molded bracelets on the hill

Else, does the eye espy wherein it may delight?

or any sound through which the soul fulfills a wish?
Devoid of bitterness, no draft wholesome?

I see among them no discerning, well-bred man.

guilty toward me for it, so extreme is his foolishness.

who will make amends when you reproach him?

They routed the kings’ Arabs and non-Arabs alike
of al-Azd, from the stock of the mighty chiefs of Saba.
And won sovereignty over the land, east and west
