Your weeping in song stirred within me

a passion that singing does not arouse.

    فَلَيتَ القَصدَ يُدرَكُ بِالتَّمني

    I wished to embrace you for as long as we live;

if only the goal could be attained by wishing!

I made you a shield between me and what I fear,

against troubles—what a shield you are!

And whenever you come to me, I rejoice, and indeed I

am lavish in welcome and unhurried attention.

And when a singer other than you comes to me,

I tell him: Away with you! Away from me!

Listen, tell al-Wali: you have risen in standing

and honor among those who depart and those who settle.

The young men have indeed fallen in love with you, and yearning

for you are the young women, human and jinn.
