والمُصطفيand the Chosen One مِنfrom دُعَاتِadvocates المُحدَثَاتِreligious innovations بَرِيfree of association
Whoever claims what he does not possess deserves to be reviled.
With insults, one falsely claims what is not in him,
And the Chosen One disavows the advocates of religious innovations.
And Al-Mustafa is free of the callers of innovation.
والعِلمُand knowledge فيin أولِيَاءِsaints الشَّرعِsacred law مُشتَرَطٌrequired
والجَاهِلُand the ignorant man الغُمرُinexperienced شَرعاًunder sacred law غَيرُnot مُعتَبَرِrecognized
And knowledge is required of saints under sacred law;
Knowledge is a condition for the guardians of Sharia.
the ignorant, inexperienced man has no standing under sacred law.
The ignorant fool is not considered legitimate in law
إنif ادَّعَىhe claims رُتبَةًa rank فيin الدِّينِreligion عَالِيَةًlofty
قَدalready كَذَّبَتهَاhave refuted it نُصُوصُthe texts الآىِthe Qur'anic verses والخَبَرِand transmitted reports
If he claims a lofty rank in religion,
If he claims a high rank in religion,
the texts of the Qur'anic verses and transmitted reports have already refuted it.
The texts of verses and narrations have denied it.
فالشَّرعُthus sacred law إنكَارُdenunciation أهلِpeople of العِلمِknowledge قَاطِبَةًall without exception
قَولاًverbally وإلاَّor else فَحَدُّthen the edge الصَّارِمِthe sharp sword الذَّعَرِfearsome
Thus sacred law prescribes denunciation by all the learned,
Islamic law is the rejection of scholars altogether
in words—or else by the edge of the fearsome sword.
An opinion, otherwise there is the strike of the terrifying sword.
والسُّنَّةُand the Sunna السَّمحَةُgracious الغَرَّاءُradiant حَاكِمَةٌthe arbiter

And the gracious, radiant Sunna is the arbiter;
The gentle, noble, splendid Sunnah rules
whoever seeks to pass judgment upon it strays in his reasoning.
Whoever tries to judge it has strayed in perception.
وقدand indeed قَضَتit has decreed باتِّبَاعِby following الجَاهِلينَthe ignorant لِمَنof those who

And it has decreed that the ignorant follow those
It has ruled the following of the ignorant by those
who are knowledgeable in the religion of Taha, master of humankind.
Who know in the religion of Taha the master of mankind.

And today the men of learning have become followers
Today the scholars have become followers
of one who cannot tell a chapter from a book,
Of those who do not distinguish between the door and the wall.

and cannot distinguish substance, when mentioned, from an accident,
He did not distinguish substance if it was said from attribute,
nor distinguish ṣuwar ('images') from suwar ('Qur'anic chapters') in pronunciation.
Nor did he distinguish images in speech from forms.

I had not thought that deviation could turn what
I did not expect misguidance to turn
goodness there is in the heart into evil after one has grown old,
What was in the heart of good to evil after maturity.

Until I saw the wonders I witnessed
We sought refuge in His might from a lifetime squandered.
May He protect us by His might from wasting our life.

عَينِthe very essence of الضلالmisguidance أفِيكُمis there among you عَينُan eye مُزدجِرِone who takes warning
A learned man's following of an audacious fool is nothing but
Is the stance of the scholar to the ignorant foot
sheer misguidance. Is there among you an eye that takes warning?
Except as the eye of misguidance, is there among you a deterrent eye?

And have you seen, in times gone by, someone with sight
Have you ever seen in the past someone with vision
led through dark nights by one bereft of sight?
Lead one in darknesses while losing sight?
