The heart now harbors a deep-seated passion,

From love for one whose abode is distant and who is ungenerous.

From love for the one I loved, I did not know

What her name was—no, nor which tribe she was from.

Except that I saw her one day,

Among a company already resolved to depart.

While the tribe was saddling the mounts,

She was in shelter, beneath deep shade.

    Beneath it, a languid-lidded, kohl-dark eye

Casts magic above a smooth cheek.

So I was bewildered, then bowed my head awhile.

Then I lingered no more than a little while.

Then she appeared, and I said, 'Who are you, O woman?'

So she hid herself from me, for fear of her husband.
