Takbira, do not think that any songstress
Do not think that any songstress
can match you in playing or in any song she attempts.
Can match your rhythm or attempt your melody.
أعلاَكِhas raised you مَولاَكِyour Lord فيamong الشَّادِينَthe singers مَرتَبَةًin rank
وَاللهُand God مَاwhatever شَاءَHe wills فيin الأشيَاءِthings فَاعِلُهُHe does it
Your Lord has raised you in rank among singers,
Your Master has raised you among singers to the highest rank.
and God does whatever He wills in all things.
And Allah does whatever He wills with things.
قَدindeed فُقتِyou have surpassed كُلَّevery امرِىءٍman يَشدُوwho sings أوor امرَأةٍwoman
والصُّبحُand the dawn أبلَحُradiant (apparently intended: أبلج) لاَnot تَخفيare hidden دَلاَئِلُهُits signs
You have surpassed every singing man or woman,
You have surpassed every singing man or woman,
and dawn is radiant, its signs unmistakable.
And the dawn grows bright, its signs cannot be hidden.
وفيand in غِنَائِكِyour singing مِنfrom مَحضِsheer اللَّذَاذَةِdelight فيin
قَلبِthe heart of اللَّبِيبِthe discerning man إنزِلاَلٌa gliding in هُوit قَاتِلُهُhis slayer
And in your singing, sheer delight glides into
And in your pure singing is for the heart of the perceptive
the discerning man's heart—a gliding that slays him.
A pleasurable sinking that kills him.
ورُضُّتِand you tamed عُودَكِyour oud حَتَّىso that إِنif حَكاكِit imitated you غِناًin singing
يَخشَاكِit fears you إِنif مَالَstrayed عَمَّاfrom what قُلتِyou said مَائِلُهُits straying part
And you have tamed your oud so that, if it echoes your song,
You have mastered your lute until if you speak nonsense in song
it fears you if any part of it strays from what you said.
Who inclines from what you say fears you.
فَهوso it قَائِلُsays مَاwhat أمسَيتِyou have become at evening قَائِلَةًsaying
وأنتَand you قَائِلَةٌsay مَاهوُwhat it قَائِلُهُis saying
So it says whatever you say at evening,
So he says whatever you say in the evening,
and you say whatever it says.
While you say whatever he says.
كَأَنَّas though مِنfrom نَغَمِكَyour notes امتَدَّتstretched forth لَهُto it نِغَمٌnotes
ومِنand from أنَامِلِكِyour fingertips امتَدَّتstretched forth أنَامِلُهُits fingertips
As though notes had stretched forth to it from your notes,
As if your melody extends a melody to him
and its fingertips had stretched forth from your fingertips.
And from your fingers extend his fingers.
