وتَردَادُ الحَمَائِمِ لِلأَغَاني
Passing by the dwelling places has worn my body away,
My body passed by the wineshops
and the doves’ repetition of songs,
And the cooing of doves to songs

and a phantom that, whenever I dozed late at night,
And an apparition, whenever I wavered weakly
came to me from a woman with henna-dyed fingertips.
Came to me from the rosy-cheeked slopes

She has a cheek that rivals the full moon in beauty,
She has a cheek rivaling the full moon in beauty
leading the self-restrained, now yielding readily to the reins.
Leading the grazing camels with silken reins

وقَدٌّ قَادني وهَوًى هَوَاني
And bosoms that are an affliction to minds,
Sickness is in hearts smitten with love
and a figure that led me, and a passion that brought me low.
And fate led me while passion made me crave

So I said to her, “Umamah, nothing has grieved me
I said to her: Umaamah, what makes me sad
except Ibn al-Ghawth, the refuge of every offender,
Other than the son of succor, refuge of all jinn

a generous man, noble in his origins and pure
Noble, his lineage pure, and his dignity intact
in his inner nature, who has surpassed the summits of hope.”
Surpassing the highest of all hopes
