منبعَwellspring الجُودِgenerosity والجَدَىand bounty والخِيرِand goodness
One day I came to Muhammad ibn al-Bashir,
One day I came to Muhammad ibn Al-Bashir
the wellspring of generosity, bounty, and goodness.
The source of generosity, excellence and goodness
فأرَانيso he showed me حَقِيقَةَthe essence of الأَدَبِcourtesy المَحضِpure
ومَحضَand pure الإِجلاَلِreverence والتَّوقِيرِand respect
So he showed me the true essence of pure courtesy,
He showed me the epitome of pure manners
and pure reverence and respect.
And utmost reverence and respect
وأعَدَّand he prepared التَّرحِيبَwelcome والبِشرَand good cheer حتىuntil
تَمَّwas fulfilled مَعنَىthe meaning of التَّرِحيبِwelcome والتَّبشِيرِand bringing glad tidings
And he prepared a welcome and good cheer, until
He welcomed me warmly and gave glad tidings
welcome and glad tidings attained their fullest meaning.
Until the meaning of welcoming was complete
بَسَطَتspread out كَفُّهُhis hand البَسَاطَةَease لِلعَاfor the bounty-seekers (word continues)
فِينَ(completion of 'bounty-seekers') أبهَىthe most splendid أرِيكَةٍcouch وَسِرِيرِand bed
His hand spread out ease for those seeking
His palm spread out rugs for the guests
bounty—the most splendid couch and bed.
More splendid than any couch or bed
ثُمَّthen صَفَّhe arranged النَّمَارِبقَthe cushions الغُرَّgleaming صَفًّاin a row
والزَّرَابيand the carpets مُبثُوثَةَspread out التَّحبِيرِadornment
Then he arranged the gleaming cushions in a row,
Then he lined up crystal decanters in rows
and the carpets lay spread out, richly adorned.
And jugs with caps decorated and edged with gold
نَثَرَhe scattered الكُتبَthe books فهىso they are دُرٌّpearls نَثِيرٌstrewn about
يُبهِرُdazzles العَقلَthe mind فَوقَbeyond دُرٍّpearls نَثِيرِstrewn about
He scattered the books: they were pearls strewn about,
He spread out books which are like scattered pearls
dazzling the mind more than pearls strewn about.
Dazzling the mind beyond any precious jewels
فَكَأنيso it was as though I لِطِيبِbecause of the delight of يَومِىmy day جَلِيسٌa companion

لأبيof Abu (father of) الطِّيِّبِal-Tayyib (the good) الأَدِيبِthe man of letters الشَّهِيرِthe renowned
So delightful was my day, it was as though I were a companion
It was as if I was a companion there
of Abu al-Tayyib, the renowned man of letters.
To the famous poet Abu Al-Tayyib
وكَأنَّand as though النَّدَىthe gathering بِسُوقِat the market of عُكَّاظِUkaz
فيin إفَاضَاتِthe outpourings of جَرولِJarwal وand جَرِيرِJarir
And as though the gathering were at the market of Ukaz,
And as if the dew was in the Ukaz market
amid the outpourings of Jarwal and Jarir.
In the outpourings of Jarwal and Jareer
إنَّهindeed he is النَّدبُthe man of mettle سُؤدَداًin eminence وذَكَاءًand intelligence
وارتِقَاءًand in rising لِكُلِّto every أمرٍmatter عَسِيرِdifficult
He is indeed the man of mettle, in eminence and intelligence,
He is excellence and intelligence personified
and in rising to every difficult task.
And the height of every difficult matter
