يَا يَسلِمُ اسلِم مِنَ الرّضوانِ بِالدُّونِ

يَا يَسلِمُ اسلِم مِنَ الرّضوانِ بِالدُّونِ

وفي الفَصَاحَةِ كُن مِثلَ ابنِ زَيدُونِ

وفي الفَصَاحَةِ كُن مِثلَ ابنِ زَيدُونِ

O Yaslim, be safe from al-Ridwan by settling for less.

O Yaslam, submit with contentment though with less fortune.

And in eloquence, be like Ibn Zaydun.

And in eloquence, be like Ibn Zaydun.

ودَوِّنِ العِلمَ تَدوِيناً تكُونَ بِهِ

ودَوِّنِ العِلمَ تَدوِيناً تكُونَ بِهِ

سَحنُونَ دهرِكَ مِثلَ الحِبرِ سَحنُونِ

سَحنُونَ دهرِكَ مِثلَ الحِبرِ سَحنُونِ

And record knowledge in writing, so that through it you become

Note down knowledge in writing to be with it,

the Sahnun of your age, like the learned Sahnun.

Like ink on paper, imprinted through your lifetime.

وَلاَ تَكُن نَافِخاً نَاراً وَلاَ بَقَراً

وَلاَ تَكُن نَافِخاً نَاراً وَلاَ بَقَراً

ولاَ تَقِف أبَداً في جَنبِ هَاوُونِ

ولاَ تَقِف أبَداً في جَنبِ هَاوُونِ

And do not blow on a fire, nor inflate cattle.

Be not a blower of fires nor cattle,

And never stand beside a mortar.

And never stand beside the foolish ones.

وَلاَ تَكُن في الجَهُولِ الصِّرفِ مُعتَقِداً

وَلاَ تَكُن في الجَهُولِ الصِّرفِ مُعتَقِداً

إِلاَّ ضَلاَلاً مُبِيناً شِيبَ بِالدُّونِ

إِلاَّ ضَلاَلاً مُبِيناً شِيبَ بِالدُّونِ

And do not ascribe to the utter ignoramus

Do not believe in ignorance without guidance,

anything but manifest error mingled with baseness.

Except clear misguidance marked with less fortune.

وأنتَ إِن تَمتَثِل هَذَا المَقَالَ تَنَل

وأنتَ إِن تَمتَثِل هَذَا المَقَالَ تَنَل

مَجداً صَمِيماً وأجراً غَيرَ مَمنُونِ

مَجداً صَمِيماً وأجراً غَيرَ مَمنُونِ

And if you heed this counsel, you shall attain

And if you heed this advice, you’ll attain

true glory and an unending reward.

True glory and unlimited reward.
