يَاO بِنتَdaughter of أحمَدَAhmad يَعقُوبٍYaqub لَعِبتِyou toyed بِنَاwith us
وهِجتِand you stirred up لِلمُرعَوينَfor those who exercise restraint الهَمَّworry وَالحَزَناand sorrow
O daughter of Ahmad Yaqub, you have made sport of us;
O daughter of Ahmad Yaqub, you have toyed with us,
You stirred anxiety and sorrow in the distraught.
And stirred worry and sorrow in those who held themselves in check.
وكَمand how many فَتَنتِyou bewitched فَتًىa young man عَنaway from سِحرِthe spell of فَاتِنَةٍa charming woman
مَاnot إِنemphatic particle أتَاكِcame to you فَتًىa young man ِإلاَّexcept بِكِby you افتَتَناhe became enchanted
How many a youth have you beguiled away from an enchantress’s spell;
And how many a youth you have bewitched away from a beauty's spell!
No youth has ever come to you without becoming captivated by you.
No youth came to you without being enchanted by you.
وكَمand how many سَلَبتِyou robbed لَبِيباًa wise man لُبَّهُhis reason وَلَهاًthrough infatuation
حتىuntil غَدَاhe became كَلِفاًlovesick فيin لَوعَةٍburning anguish وعَنَاand suffering
How many a discerning man have you robbed of his reason, love-bewildered,
And how many a wise man you have robbed of his reason through infatuation,
Until he became lovesick, in burning anguish and suffering.
Until he became lovesick, in burning anguish and suffering.
مَازِلتُI kept أسمَعُI hear هَذَاthis عَنكِabout you مُذfor زَمَنٍsome time
ولاَand not أُبَالِىI care حتىuntil فُتِنتُI was bewitched أنَاI myself
Long had I heard this said of you,
I kept hearing this about you for some time,
And paid it no heed—until I myself was captivated.
And paid no heed—until I myself was bewitched.
