خَلِيلِىَّmy two dear friends لاَno لاَno تُبدِيَباyou two show (spelling unclear) لِىَto me التَّلَكِيَاhesitation

My two friends, no, no—show me no hesitation.
My friend, do not reveal my misery to me
And turn aside to those dwellings and weep.
And weep over those dwellings and wail
وَسُحَّاand pour forth, you two مَصُونَguarded الدَّمعِthe tears فيin عَرصَاتِهَاtheir courtyards

And pour your guarded tears into their courtyards.
And pass gently, with tears hidden in the watering places
And pass by the traces of the dwellings and greet them.
And pass by the ruins of the abodes and greet them
وِإنand although بَلِيَتthey decayed إِلاَّexcept ثَلاَثاًthree خَوَالِداًenduring ones

Though they have decayed, save three enduring hearthstones,
If only there remained three everlasting things:
a trench and a tethering stake, and the winds have ruined them.
Sleep, a gazelle, and a winding stream
وغَيَّرَand altered بعدَafter الحَيِّthe tribe إِذwhen نَحنُwe جِيرَةٌneighbors

And after the tribe departed—once we were neighbors—rain altered
It changed after life, while we were neighbors
their landmarks, until it clothed them in decay.
Its landmarks, until the hoary darkness clothed it
فَإِنَّfor indeed لَهَاbelonging to them حَقَّa claim to البُكَاءِweeping عَلَيكُمَاupon you both
وَقَدand indeed كَانَwas رَبعُthe abode of الحِبِّthe beloved لِلدَّمعِfor tears مُجرِيَاa cause of flowing
For they have a claim upon the tears of you both,
It has a right to weep over you both
and the beloved's abode has indeed set tears flowing.
For a quarter of love belonged to shedding tears
ألَمhave you not تَرَيَاyou two seen الأطلالَthe ruins مَاwhat هِيthey are إِنَّهَاindeed they are

Have you two not seen what the ruins are? They are
Did you not see the ruins - they are
the ruins of al-Liwa, from al-Liwa's bygone age.
The heights of longing, the everlasting ruins
فَلَيسَso it is not وَفاءًloyalty منكماfrom you both أنto تَسَلَّيَاyou two find consolation
بِهِنَّover them وَلاَnor أنto تَسألانيyou two ask me التَّسَلِيَاconsolation
It is no loyalty on your part to find consolation
It is no loyalty in you two to be consoled
over them, nor to ask me to forget my sorrow.
By them, nor to ask me for consolation
فإِنfor if أنتُمَاyou two حَيِّيتُمَاyou both greeted كُلَّevery مَربَعٍcampsite
وأَبنتُمَاand you both made clear مِنof رَسمِهَاits trace المُتَعَفِّيَاwhat was fading
For if you both have greeted every campsite
For if you two lived, you rebuilt every square
and made out the fading parts of its trace,
And its effaced design, and put out
وأبدَيتُمَاand you both revealed مَاwhat اكتَنَّlay concealed مِنof لاعِجِburning anguish الهَوَىlove
وأطفأتُمَاand you both quenched الأشجَانَthe sorrows عَنِّfrom me غَنِّيَاsing, you two
and revealed what lay hidden of love's burning anguish,
What was concealed of the blazes of passion
and quenched my sorrows, then sing to me.
And extinguished the flames of my singing
فَقَدfor indeed أبدَتrevealed الأطلالَthe ruins مَاwhat كُنتُI was مُخفِياًconcealing

For the ruins have revealed what I had concealed,
So the ruins revealed what I had kept hidden
while remembrance of pleasure concealed what I had revealed.
And the denial of passion hid what I had revealed
فَقَالاَthen the two said وَقَدwhile already أغرَىincited الجَوَىlove's anguish بيagainst me بَرحَهُits torment

Then the two said, while love's anguish loosed its torment upon me,
They said, and the weather stirred in me its dormancy
and grief revealed what had lain hidden within me:
And revealed what had been hidden in me
أتصبُوdo you yearn وَقَدthough already لاَحَتappeared بِفَودِكَat your temple شَيبَةٌa gray hair

“Do you still yearn, though a gray hair has appeared at your temple,
Do you pine while gray hair has appeared on your temples
and the steed of youthful dalliance and ardor stands unsaddled?”
And the youth and adolescence of your eyelids are bare?

I said, “Chaste, Udhri love for her has afflicted me;
So I said, the passion with an excuse has afflicted me
will chaste, Udhri love not win acceptance for my excuse?
Is the passionate blamed for what excites his passion?

And in writing, ‘gray hair’ resembles ‘gray hair’ [as written],
And in writing, gray hair resembles a gray hair
and a young man's mind follows wishful thinking in its understanding.
And the soul of a youth equals wishes in understanding

Turn your gazes back to my two temples;
Restore to my cheeks with your glance
perhaps what has settled upon my temples is youth.”
Perhaps what has replaced my youth my cheek will restore

Indeed, I was reproached for loving her whose love enslaved
You blamed me for loving one whose love
my heart, until I prolonged my complaints,
My heart exhausted, until I prolonged complaining

by a carefree companion who has no inclination toward love.
A friend, a bosom friend who does not incline toward passion
So I told him, “Stop reproaching me, and leave me alone.
So I said to him, leave off blaming me and be my comrade

O you who blame me for ardor, you have provoked me to it
have you not seen that reproaching a lover only spurs the lover on?”
Have you not seen the ardent blamed for provoking ardor?

Whenever I seek escape from my love for al-Rabab,
When I refrain from love of the beloved I precisely
the days of al-Liwa deny me escape.
Cannot, the days of passion do not allow refraining

One day she appeared before us, seeing off a neighbor
One day a neighbor appeared to me, bidding farewell
of hers, appearing in the most splendid jewelry.
To her, and she was appearing in the most splendid adornment

So I fell madly in love with her, until I plunged into chasms
So I was fascinated with her until I stumbled into a passion
all around me in passion, and found the plunge sweet.
Encompassing me, ardent love, and I began to stumble

And the streams of my tears flowed down my breast, adolescently
upon my throat, and she saw my streaming tears,
Behind my tears, flowing down

she swayed, dune above dune, and I thought her
She swayed with a subtly bending branch above a branch, so I imagined her
a tender, swaying branch of the ban-tree.
A tender, bending bough of saplings

And she shone; I took the full moon for her face's bright brow
And the full moon of her face appeared, radiance
in radiance—yet the full moon has no such radiance.
While the full moon has no such radiance
وَنَصَّتand she raised her head فَأَبدَتso she revealed جِيدَthe neck of أُمِّthe mother of جِدايَةٍa fawn

And she raised her head, revealing the neck of a fawn's mother;
She glanced, and revealed the cheek of Umm Jiday's mother
I said, “Is she an oryx, or is she a fawn's mother?”
So I said, is she deluded or is she mother of a lost one?

And the stealing of her smile revealed
meadow daisies; and her gums, ruwayziya [unclear].
Meadows of chamomile and slopes of basil

and they imagined him a front-runner in verse's race [reading uncertain].
And his peers in the craft of poetry load me

Tomorrow do not boast, for you are no poet
nor one adorned with vigorous eloquence.
And have never been adorned with eloquence

Leave poetry, for you are not one of its people
and when challenged, you could not rise to the challenge.
And cannot face the challenge if challenged

Be warned by those I warned before you, so they slunk away
disgraced and fled with their backs turned—follow their example.
In defeat and fled in retreat, warned

You are nothing but miserliness, ignorance, and harshness;
You are nothing but stinginess, ignorance and coldness
that is why you dwelt among the uncouth and the foolish.
That is why you lived with the cold-hearted and the foolish

By God, you have never been the polished one in the period

Nor if you raced were you the winner

You were created wayward, in waywardness following
You were created deviant in deviance, rhyming
a wayward man, tracing a wayward man's path.
Deviantly in the method of the deviant, rhyming

And you allied with layered ignorance and wickedness
and vile character—conceit, arrogance, and ostentation.
And bad morals, pride, arrogance and pretentiousness

And you exchanged the path of guidance for the way of caprice
And you substituted for the path of guidance the path of passion
and abasement, and substituted impudence for modesty.
And frivolity, and replaced decency with shamelessness

And you were compensated for gaining loftiness with begging
and your wrongful taking of Muslims' wealth.
And seizing the wealth of Muslims came to you

You attached yourself to the impostor, hoping for advancement;
You clung to the anti-Christ aspiring to advancement
far-fetched is any advancement you might gain from him.
While it is far from him that you should gain advancement

Open sinfulness, sorcery and singing

So you woke up despised, not free
shame for an instant, nor adorning yourself with honor.
Of the ignoble, nor adorned with the excellent
وَلَمand never تُرَyou were seen يَوماًone day طُولَthroughout دَهرِكَyour life صَائِماًfasting
وَلَمand never تُرَyou were seen يَوماًone day فيin الزَّمَانِtime مُصَلِّيَاpraying
Not once in all your life have you been seen fasting,
You never saw fasting a day in your lifetime
nor have you ever been seen praying.
Nor praying one day in time
وَلَمand not تَشتَغِلyou occupied yourself ِإلاَّexcept بِبَطنِكَwith your belly دَائِماًalways

You have always occupied yourself with nothing but your belly,
You did not busy yourself but with your stomach always
and you do not fulfill what men have fulfilled.
And you do not fulfill what makes men real men
عَدانيheld me back عَنfrom هَجوِsatirizing المُذَمَّمِthe blameworthy man أننيthat I

What holds me back from satirizing the blameworthy man is that,
It distracted me from lampooning the despised one, that I
whenever I weave verse, elegant in its weaving and dew-fresh,
When I compose poetry articulated in binding
وأَهدَيتُهand I offered it مِثلَlike الجُمَانِpearls مُنَظَّماًstrung together
جَزِيلَrich in مَعَانٍmeanings وَاضِحاًclear مُتَبَدِّيَاmanifest
and offer it like pearls strung together,
And I present it like necklaces, organized,
rich in meaning, clear and manifest,
Abundant in meaning, lucid, evident
تَفَيَهقَhe blustered بِاللَّحنِwith faulty speech الرَّكِيكِfeeble وَخَالَهُand imagined it
كَمِثلِto be like الذيwhat أهدَيتُI offered أصبَحَhe became مُهدِيَاoffering
he blusters with feeble, faulty speech, imagining it
He babbles it in ragged melody, though I presented
like what I offered, and sets about offering it;
What I presented, it appeared presented to him
وأنيand that I إِنif بَالَغتُwent to extremes فيin صِرفِpure هَجوِهِsatirizing him
وَمَزَّقتُهand I tore him apart مِنfrom أصلِهhis roots كُنتُI would be مُطرِيَاpraising
and that, if I go to extremes in pure invective against him
And that if I am excessive in dispelling his lampoon
and tear him up by the roots, I would still be praising him.
And tear him apart from his source, I would be showering
فَهَاكَso take رَوِيًّاa rhyme-letter رَائِقاًpleasing وقَصِيدَةًand a poem
مُنَمَّقَةornamented ً أحسَنتُI excelled فِيهَاin it التَّمطِيَاswaggering
So take a pleasing rhyme-letter and a poem,
Refined, in which I perfected refinement
ornamented, in which I have excelled at swaggering.

And poor composure, and make the ode, O you
and faulty meter, and be sure to make yāʾ the rhyme-letter.
