هَبَّتrose جُوَيرِيَّةٌJuwayriyya عَذلاَin reproach تُجَارِينيcontending with me
هَبَّت جُوَيرِيَّةٌ عَذلاَ تُجَارِيني
مِنfrom أهلِthe people of دَارِىmy home لاَمِنnot from أهلِthe people of دَارِينِDarin
مِن أهلِ دَارِى لاَمِن أهلِ دَارِينِ
Juwayriyya rose to contend with me in reproach,
Jawiriyah reproached me with abandonment,
one of my own household, not of the people of Darin.
Not from my own people, but from others.
هَبّتrose تَلُومُblaming عَلَىfor بُطئِيmy slowness فَقُلتُso I said لهاto her
هَبّت تَلُومُ عَلَى بُطئِي فَقُلتُ لها

ِإني بَطِئتُ ولَكِن لاَ تَلُومِيني
She began blaming me for my delay, so I said to her:
She reproached and blamed my slowness, so I said to her,
I have indeed tarried, but do not blame me.
"I was slow, but do not blame me."
جَاوَرتُI dwelt beside بَعدِكِafter you مَنthose who يحلُوis sweet جِاوَرُهُمُbeing their neighbor

في كُلِّ حِينٍ عَلَى مَرِّ الأحَايِينِ
Since leaving you, I have dwelt beside those whose company is sweet,
After you, I lived alongside those whose company
at every moment, throughout the passing of time:
Gladdens me at all times and in all states.

The gate of chivalry, glory and religion.

Bearers of all the tribulations of fate when they strike,

Racers to the farthest goals in arenas.

For my needs, it is enough that I am in their presence,
It suffices me, from making the pilgrimage, that I am
in a fortress of honor, support, and security.
In their fortress of might, support and safety.

When I gaze at the lights of their faces,
When I look upon the lights of their faces,
my rust-stains are scoured away, and pillars are raised for me.
My cheeks flush and pillars rise up for me.

And if I shake the gardens of praising them,
bounty showers down from the gardens' great trees.
Fruits rain down from the orchards.

So I gather it, without reminders of favors or weariness,
So pick them for me without coyness or boredom,
close at hand, with kindness and tenderness.
Gently, kindly and smoothly.

Of others than them, or between them and me,

had you lived beside them, you would not have blamed me.
If you had lived alongside them you would not blame me.
So dwell beside them and relent—or else blame me.
So live alongside them, and blame me or reproach me!
