If my Lord concealed the sheikh from certain groups,

granting them respite to revile the delight of the eye,

God has let me witness his special distinction, despite

my own faults, one piled upon another.

For what is in me did not prevent me from seeing what

the Giver of gifts to the perfected among humankind bestowed on him.

The soul's darkness thus revealed his beauties to me,

as night's darkness reveals the moon's splendor.

Groups listened to them; their gatherings contained no

one to denounce and rebuke the sheikh's humiliation.

What emboldened them against our guide and deceived them

about the passing of wealth and life was their reprieve.

Did they not know that He grants wrongdoing respite,

and His seizure, when it comes, is that of One all-powerful?

Did they not know that the sheikhs have a defender

who is never absent—or did they think He would not defend them?

    كلا وسبهمُ للشيخ لم يَضَرِ

    They suppose their abuse of the sheikh harms him;

not so: their abuse of the sheikh has done no harm.

A wasp alighting on a date cluster is of little account,

for the cluster does not complain of wasps alighting.

Tell me: is it the solid rock's summit that is harmed,

or the white-footed ibex's horn when ibexes butt against stone?

Then let him lampoon us: if he lampoons us along with them, ours is

the merit of emulation and the merit of following their footsteps.

And after our sheikhs have been reviled, we have

no desire to be spared vile words.

So since they were reviled, we drink abuse as honey,

and whoever among us drinks praise drinks bitter aloe.

How could we hope, when our sheikhs are reviled,

to clothe ourselves in the adornments of praise and patterned robes?

    وسبهم إن أتَانَا آخرَ الخبرِ

    So praise of them, if it reaches us, is praise of us;

and abuse of them, if it reaches us, is ours too—end of the story.
