عَجِبتُI marveled لأُسرةِat the family of الحَسَنِal-Hasan الدُينَاthe lowly
بِألبَانِon the milk of المَذَمَّةِdisgrace قَدalready غُذِّينَاwe were nourished
I marveled at al-Hasan's lowly family.
I am amazed at the family of Al-Hasan Al-Din
On the milk of disgrace we have been nourished.
Who have been nourished on bitter milk
يَرُومُونَthey seek افتِخَاراًpride واعتِلاءًand eminence
ولَيسُواand they are not الفَاخِرِينَthe distinguished المُعتَلِينَاthe exalted
They seek pride and eminence,
They aspire to pride and arrogance
yet they are neither distinguished nor exalted.
Yet they are not the proud and arrogant
أفَخرُboasting? بَعدَمَاafter قدalready بُلًّغَتهُreported it

شُهودُwitnesses الحَاضِرينَthose present الغَائِبِينَاthose absent
Boasting, after it has already been reported
I am still proud after I have clearly revealed it
by witnesses present to those absent?
To those present and those absent as witnesses
فَقَدfor indeed حَسِبُواthey reckoned نُفُوسَهُمthemselves سِوَاهُمother than themselves
وقَدand indeed حَسِبُواthey reckoned شَمالِيُهمtheir left hands يَمِينَاthe right
For they have mistaken themselves for others,
They have considered themselves apart from others
and mistaken their left hands for right hands.
And considered their left to be their right
طَغَواthey acted tyrannically وَبَغَواand they wronged عَلَىَّme فَقُلتُso I said صَبراًpatience
ولَمand not نَكُwe were رُتبَةًin rank فِئِينَاequals (uncertain reading)
They tyrannized and wronged me, so I said: Patience!
They wronged me and rebelled, so I remained patient
Nor were we equals in rank [reading uncertain].
And we were not of the defeated group
فَظَنُّونَاso they thought us عَجَزنَاwe were powerless فأَشرَأَبُّواso they craned their necks
وقالواand they said لَنwill not نَدِينَwe submit ولَنand will not نَلِينَاwe yield
They thought us powerless, so they stretched their necks high,
They thought we were helpless so they became insolent
and said: “We will not submit, nor yield,
Saying we will not submit or be soft
ولَنand will not نَستَعطِفَwe seek the favor of الأَعدَاءَthe enemies إِنَّاindeed we
لَنَحنُwe certainly are الغَالِبُونَthe conquerors الغَالِبِينَاthe conquerors
nor seek the enemies' favor; indeed,
And we will not appease enemies, we
we are the conquerors of conquerors.”
Are the victorious, the triumphant
وظَلُّواand they continued فيin إفتِخَارِهِمtheir boasting وَباتُواand they spent the night

They continued their boasting by day and by night,
They remained proud and went to bed
and every one of them was filled with warm milk.
Each filled with warm milk
وَلَمَّاand when إِنemphatic particle نَظَرتُI examined الشَّرعَthe religious law فِيهُمconcerning them

And when I examined religious law concerning them,
But when I looked to religious law regarding them
though I desired reconciliation and gentleness,
Wanting to be gentle and make peace
بَدَاit occurred لِىto me أنto أُذِلَّهُمhumiliate them بِبَطشِىwith my might

وكُنتُand I was بِأنfor أُذِلَّهُمhumiliating them قَمِينَاwell suited
it occurred to me to humble them with my might,
It seemed I should humiliate them with my might
and I was well suited to humbling them.
And I was determined to humiliate them
فَجِئتُهُمso I came to them أُحَاوِلُهُمconfronting them سُحَيراًshortly before dawn
ومَاand not أَلفَيتُهُمI found them مُتَهَجِّدِينَاkeeping night prayer
So I came to confront them shortly before dawn,
So I came to cajole them gently
and did not find them keeping prayerful vigil.
But did not find them watchful

ومَاand not كُنتُI was الجَبَانَthe coward المُستَكِينَاthe submissive
So maternal kinship led me to lofty honors,
Cowardice led me to play along
and I was no coward bowed in submission.
For I was not a coward or weak

I set upon the face of their tallest in frame—
I made their tallest into bones
and their sweatiest-browed when they grew afraid,
And their most arrogant into creased foreheads when they cowered
والآمِهمand their basest وأجهَلِهِمand their most ignorant; obscure أُصُولاًin ancestry

and their basest, most obscure in ancestry,
And their most foolish and ignorant into leaders
and their foulest in the field and in faith,
And their most wicked into guides and religion

and their most foolish, most laden with faults,
I made their most stupid and flawed
and their worst companion when they kept company—
And their worst when accompanying, a mate

The cycles of time in it
cut off the tongues of those who speak.
Kept cutting the tongues of the speakers

Their whole company followed, in every judgment,
I made all of them in every opinion
their leader, Muhammad al-Amin.
Follow their leader Muhammad the Trustworthy

He tightened the turban of the cherished king,
He tightened the turban of the noble king
and bowed his head, resting his mind awhile.
And bowed his head to reflect for a moment
قَالَhe said لَهُمto them مَبَادَرَةُhastening toward الهُوينَاease; leisurely gentleness

He said to them, seizing opportunities

Brings a man precious wealth

Whoever seeks lofty honors is wearied by them,
He who seeks the heights I have burdened him
and squanders his wealth in their pursuit.
And he was humiliated in them

Be lowly: in that lies your proper course,
Be humble, in it lies your rectitude
and you have already been schooled in it.
And you were taught by it

Betray your neighbor's covenant, and be
Betray your neighbor’s covenant and
those who deprive him in every season of plenty.
In every fertile land, deprive him

If a guest comes to you, then

Prevent the guest right from him

If your old women ask for a waterskin strap,
If your old women ask for support
then be killers of the old women.
Then fight and kill the old women

Guard your wealth at your honor's expense, until
Guard your wealth through honor until
you become, like your ancestors, much reviled.
You are like prestigious ancestors
صَونُprotecting المَالِwealth فِيهِin it جَدىًgain ونَفعٌand benefit

Guarding wealth brings gain and benefit,
Safeguarding wealth brings merit and benefit
but honor brings no benefit when safeguarded.
But honor brings no benefit when protected

Do not strive for praise and glory,
Do not pursue glory and majesty
nor enter the gathering of the most generous.
And do not aspire to the light of the generous
فإِنَّكُمُfor you إِذَاif جَالَستُمُوهُمsit with them

For if you sit with them,
For verily when you sit with them
even briefly, they will harm you for years.
Even for a while, they would curse you for years

The souls of your most vicious would yearn
The souls of your worst will yearn
for their deeds, so such deeds would appear among us.
To imitate their deeds and so be among them

The guest would hope for our generosity, until
A guest hopes for our hospitality until
he passed our way and came to dwell among us.
He passes by us and reaches our valley
فيَفُسَدَso would be ruined مَالُنَاour wealth ونُخِيبَand we would fail رَأياًin judgment

Then our wealth would be ruined, and we would fail in judgment,
Then our wealth is corrupted and our view foiled
and we would be found sitting in the mosques.
As we sit idle in the mosques

It used to greatly disturb
our elders, whenever they heard a call to prayer.
Our elders when they heard our ears

And we thought the Qur'an was poetry,
And we thought the Quran was poetry
in which the earlier generations clothed the later ones.”
Time has covered the early and the late
فَقَالُواso they said إِنَّindeed رَأيَكَyour opinion لَيسَis not يُعصَىdisobeyed

So they said: “Your opinion shall not be disobeyed;
So they said your view cannot be defied
you will find us obedient to your command.”
We will find you obedient
فَقَالَthen he said لَهُمto them إذَاif طَاوَعتُمُونيyou obey me

He told them: “If you obey me,
So he said to them, if you obey me
I will lead you along the path of the forebears—
I will take you on the path of the forebears

Our exemplary early ones bequeathed to us
their traits, so we became the heirs.”
Their traits, so we were the inheritors

So he clothed them in the cloak of miserliness, until
He clothed them in the gown of stinginess until
they stood resplendent through its bounty.
They openly rejoiced in His bounty
فَأصبَحَهُمso it served them a morning drink دِينَهُمtheir creed فيin دَنِّa wine jar of ذُلٍّabasement

So their creed served them a morning draught in a jar of abasement,
His religion made them dwindle in disgrace
echoing groans from its humiliation.
Returning the moan of the complaint
فَقَالَthen he said لَهُمto them رَضِيتُI am satisfied أقَدhave ... already? رَضِيتُمyou are satisfied

Then he said: “I am content; are you content?”
He said to them, I am pleased, are you pleased?
They said: “Like you, we are indeed content.
They said we are like you, pleased

Upon disbelievers, would complain of Muslims

The disbelievers support the disbelievers
