How long shall I pine in love for Su‘ad,

with no solace, for she is among my foes?

I love union with her, but she loves cutting me off.

And I long for her nearness, but she prefers my being far away.

A maiden who, when she withdrew from me, struck me

with an illness in my heart’s innermost core.

As though a fire were kindled in my heart,

and in my eyes were worn-out waterskins.

Remembering her keeps me awake, so my eyelid

is sore at both corners from sleeplessness.

And I recall her swaying whenever there sways a slender bough

of the fresh-green bān tree, unhurriedly.

The sun reminds me of Su‘da’s face

when it shines in the darkness of the month’s closing nights.

She smiles, revealing a gleaming mouth, as though it held

    potent wine after sleep.

Daisy blossoms are put to shame by its radiance,

though repeatedly watered by night and morning showers.

Its gums seem like the woven patterns of al-Rawayra,

in blackness—yet they are nearer still to black.

    فصرتُ جَوًى أهِيمُ بِكُلِّ وَادِ

    The camel-driver drove her onward with song, and drove away my patience;

so I became all heartache, wandering through every valley.

And you meet ‘Abdu Kant; in meeting him

lie the utmost goals one could hope to attain.

If you come to him, you find a gallant man,

    ever smiling, overflowing with favors,

    cultured, learned, noble-spirited, generous,

despite his hardships, his hearth’s ashes heaped high.

He drank deeply of the sciences of sacred law until

he grew strong and stood firm on right guidance.

Then he sought from the Truth a source of aid,

far away, which calling could not bring near.

And he cinched the saddles of unfaltering resolve,

and saddled up with wealth both new and inherited,

until he attained a rank far beyond reach,

and became like a rare marvel in assemblies.

Rhymes yearn to reach his presence,

and come to him finely adorned, one by one.

No wonder, for he has forefathers,

noble men whose excellence is evident among the people.

They eradicated every failing and raised

the edifice of glory after its collapse.

May their Lord bless them and grant

them victory shining in every assembly,

and grant ‘Abdu the rank of his parents,

by the honor of the Chosen One, best of servants.

Upon him, his family, and all the Companions,

    may God’s blessing endure forever.
