لُغَىdialects حَسَّانَof Hassān لَمdid not تَكُbe لِلنَّبِيهِfor the discerning man
لُغَى حَسَّانَ لَم تَكُ لِلنَّبِيهِ
بِلاَئِقَةٍfitting ولَمand did not تَكُbe تَطَّبِيهِentice him
بِلاَئِقَةٍ ولَم تَكُ تَطَّبِيهِ
For the discerning man, Hassān's dialects were not
The poetry of Hassaan was not suitable for the Prophet
fitting, nor did they entice him.
Nor was it his glorification
فَحَىَّso come عَلَىto القَرِيضِpoetry فَإِنَّfor indeed فِيهِin it
فَحَىَّ عَلَى القَرِيضِ فَإِنَّ فِيهِ
مَجَالاًa field لِلزَّوَايَاfor the Zawāyā تَقتَفِيهِyou follow it
مَجَالاً لِلزَّوَايَا تَقتَفِيهِ
So come to poetry, for within it
So he turned to versifying, for in it
is a field for the Zawāyā that you may pursue.
There is space for intentions to pursue
ولَيسَand is not المَرءُa man إِنif يَكُhe is قَاصِراًfalling short عَنof
ولَيسَ المَرءُ إِن يَكُ قَاصِراً عَن
طِبَاعِqualities أبِيهِhis father ِإلاَّexcept كَالسَّفِيهِlike a fool
طِبَاعِ أبِيهِ ِإلاَّ كَالسَّفِيهِ
And a man, if he falls short of
A man is not deficient if
his father's qualities, is no different from a fool.
His nature differs from his father's, but foolish
