أهَاجَتdid ... stir? لَكَfor you الأشجانَsorrows لَمحَةُa flash بَارِقِof lightning
وزَورَةُand a visit طَيفٍa phantom مِنfrom أُمَامَةَUmamah طَارِقِvisiting by night
Did a flash of lightning stir sorrows in you,
And a visit from Umamah's night-roaming phantom,
وذِكرَةُand remembrance أيامِthe days الهَوَىof love عِندَfor ذِيone possessed of الهُوَىlove
لَيَالِيَnights لاَnot أختَشِىI fear طُرُوقَthe arrival الطَّوَارِقِof night visitors
And remembrance of love's days for one in love—
Nights when I feared no night visitors' arrival?
لَيَالِيnights طَابَwas sweet الوَصلُunion فِيهَاduring them لِوَاصِلٍfor one enjoying union
وأينَعُand ripened دَوحُthe grove العِشقِof passion فِيهَاduring them لِعَاشِقِfor a lover
Nights when union was sweet to a lover,
And passion's grove ripened then for a lover,
وأعطَيتُand I gave فِيهَاduring them مَحضَthe purity وُدِّيof my affection أُمَامَةًUmamah
ولَمand not أكُI was ذَاpossessed of وَجهَينِtwo faces مِثلَlike المُنَافِقِa hypocrite
And on those nights I gave Umamah my pure affection,
Nor was I two-faced like a hypocrite.
أُمَامَةُUmamah مَاwhat حَمَّلتنيyou burdened me with مِنof صَبَابَةٍardent longing
وَإِنand even if خِلتِهِyou thought it قَدindeed لاَقَwas fitting لَيسَit is not بِلاَئِقِfitting
Umamah, the yearning you have burdened me with,
Though you deemed it fitting, is not fitting.
أبِيتُI spend the night سَمِيرَa night companion النَّجمِto the stars والرَّكبُwhile the caravan هُجَّدٌis asleep
تَسُحُّstreams عَلَىupon نَحرِىmy upper chest دِمَاءُblood الحَمَالِقِof the inner eyelids
I pass the night keeping the stars company while the caravan sleeps;
Blood from my inner eyelids streams over my breast.
وقَلبيand my heart يغليboils مِنfrom لَظَىthe blaze الوَجدِof longing خَافِقاًthrobbing
فَعُجبِىso, how I marvel لِقَلَبٍat a heart مِنfrom لَظَىthe blaze الوَجدِof longing خَافِقِthrobbing
And my heart boils, throbbing in the blaze of longing;
How I marvel at a heart that throbs in longing's blaze!
وِإنand if تَحفَظِىyou keep العَهدَthe pledge الذِيthat كَانَwas بَينَنَاbetween us
وقَدand indeed يَحفَظُmay keep المَومُوقُthe beloved عَهداًa pledge لِوَامِقِfor a lover
And if you keep the pledge that stood between us—
And a beloved may keep a pledge to a lover—
فَعَهدُكِthen your pledge مَحفُوظٌis kept ولُقيَاكِand meeting you مُنيَةٌa cherished wish
وَمرآكِand the sight of you لِلعَينَينِfor both eyes أحسُنُthe fairest رَائِقِdelight
Then your pledge is kept, and meeting you is my wish,
And the sight of you is the fairest delight to the eyes.
وَثغرُكِand your mouth عَذبٌis sweet وَابتِسَامُكِand your smile بَارِقٌflashing like lightning
فَهَلso, is there? لِىfor me ثَوًىa dwelling بَينَbetween العُذَيبِal-Udhayb وبَارِقِand Bariq
And your mouth is sweet, and your smile flashes like lightning;
So is there a dwelling for me between al-Udhayb and Bariq?
وإِنand if خُنتِyou betray عَهدِىmy pledge دُونَwithout ذَنبٍan offense جَنيتُهُI committed
وقَطَّعتِand you sever مِنِّيwith me مُحكَمَاتِthe firmly secured الوَثَائِقِbonds
And if you betray my pledge, though I have done no wrong,
And sever the firmly fastened bonds with me,
نَهَضتُI set out لِدَارِfor the house الكَامِلِof al-Kamil السَّيِّدِthe master الذيwhose
أيَادِيهِhis favors تَنهَلُّpour down إنهَلاَلَlike the pouring الوَدَائِقِof rain-showers
I will set out for the house of al-Kamil, the master whose
Favors pour down like showers of rain.
أكَامِلُO Kamil أنتَyou المُستَلَذُّthe delightful one الخَلاَئِقِin character
وأنتَand you الفَتَىthe noble man المَرضِىُّwell esteemed بَينَamong الخَلاَئِقِall people
O Kamil, you are delightful in character,
And you are the noble man esteemed among all people.
وأنتَand you الذيthe one who جُرِّبتَyou were tested فيin كُلِّevery مَشهَدٍarena
فَألفِيتَso you were found مِفتَاحاًa key لِقُفلِto the lock المَضَائِقِof hardships
And you are the one tested in every arena,
And found a key to hardship's lock.
وأنتَand you الذيthe one whom أولاَكbestowed upon you مَولاَكَyour Lord نِعمَةًa blessing
فَفَرَّقتَهَاthen you shared it فيamong النَّاسِthe people مِثلَlike المفَارِقِone taking leave
And you are the one your Lord endowed with a blessing,
Which you shared among the people like one taking leave.
تُوَالِيyou continually offer لِمَنto whoever والاَكَis loyal to you أبهَىthe brightest بَشَاشَةٍcheerfulness
وتُولِيand you grant لِمَنto whoever وَلاَّكَtakes you as patron أسنَىthe finest العَلاَئِقِgifts
You continually greet those loyal to you with the brightest cheer,
And grant the finest gifts to those who take you as patron.
وتَبسُطُand you set out لِلزُّوَارِfor visitors كُلَّevery أرِيكَةٍcouch
مُنَمَّقَةٍornately adorned مَحفُوفَةٍsurrounded بالنَّمَارِقِby cushions
And you set out every couch for visitors,
Richly adorned and surrounded by cushions.
وَتَسقِيهُمُand you give them to drink مِنكَfrom you الحَدِيثَconversation مُعَتَّقاًwell aged
وتَمنَحُand you give صفوَthe purity الوِدِّof affection غَيرِwithout being مُمَاذِقِinsincere
And give them your own conversation to drink, well aged,
And offer pure affection, with no dissembling.
فَلاَso do not تَحسَبَنَّever suppose الكَعكَcake كُلَّevery مُدَوَّرٍround thing
ولاَnor كُلَّevery طِرفٍnoble steed لاَحِقاًable to attain شَاوَthe pace لاَحِقِof Lahiq
So do not think every round thing a cake,
Nor every steed able to match Lahiq's pace.
أتَحسَبُdo you think? لِيfor me فيin الشِّعرِpoetry شِبهاًan equal ألَمhave ... not? تَكُنyou were
نَظَرتَyou looked إِلَىat مَروِيِّهِits transmitted verses فِيon المَهَارِقِthe written pages
Do you think I have a peer in poetry? Have you not
Looked at its transmitted verses on the written pages?
فَكَيفَhow, then? أُجَارَيcan I be rivaled فِيهِin it وهوwhen it is سَجِيِّتِيmy innate nature
وآخُذُهُand I draw it مِنfrom بَينَbetween جَيبِيmy collar opening وعَاتِقِيand my shoulder
How, then, can I be rivaled in it, when it is my nature,
And I draw it from between my collar and my shoulder?
ومَعدِنُهُand its source فِينَاamong us وعَرصَةُand the courtyard دَارِهِof its home
مَجَرُّthe trail عَوَالِينَاof our tall lances ومَجرَىand the racecourse السَّوَابِقِof fleet steeds
And its source is among us, and its dwelling's courtyard
Is where our lances trail and fleet steeds race.
فَشِعرِيَso my poetry فيin أقصَىthe farthest المَغَارِبِwestern lands شَائِعٌis widespread
وجَاوزَينهُand carried it beyond الصِّيتُrenown أقصَىthe farthest المَشَارِقِeastern lands
So my poetry is widespread in the farthest western lands,
And renown has carried it beyond the farthest eastern lands.
فَمَنso whoever كَانَis مُسطَاعَcapable of السِّبَاقracing فَذَاthen here is المَدَىthe course
وهَاand behold أنَاI ذَاthis one فَليأتِنِيso let him come to me بالمُسَابِقِwith a challenger
So whoever is capable of racing—here is the course;
And here I am—let him bring me a challenger.
