وقفتُ على التليل فبت ليلِى

حزينا من طُلَيل بالتليلِ

I stopped upon the little hill and spent my night

sorrowful over a little ruin on the little hill.

طليل من عبيلة لاتلم يَا

عويذل إن حبست به جُميلي

A little ruin of ʿUbayla—do not blame me, O

little censurer, if I tethered my little camel there.

طليلاتُ العقيلات اعتراني

غريمها السويلب للعقيل

The little noble ladies' little ruins—I was beset

by their little love-torment, that little robber of reason.

دميع مقيلتى يجرى وحلت

سويدائى طليلات الأهيل

My little eye's tearlets flow, and there have settled

in my heart's core the little traces of the dear folk.

ولم تبرح سويكنةً قليبي

غزيلةٌ صويرمة الحُبيلِ

Still dwelling in my little heart is

a little gazelle who severs the slender bond:

موينحة عويشقها غديرا

هويجرة موينعة الوصيل

granting her little lover a little treachery,

a little deserter who withholds the least reunion,

نويعمة نويضرة عذيب

أُليماها زويححة الكفيل

a tender little one, a fresh little one, with sweetness

in her little dusky lips, broad in her little rump;

نويقضة العهيد بعيدود

قويتلة الصبيب بلا عقيل

a little breaker of the pledge, aloof,

a little slayer of the lovesick, without a shred of reason.

جويهلة عبيلة أن شجاني

خييلها الطويرق باللييل

ʿUbayla little knows that I was saddened

by her little phantom visiting in the little night.

فإن يكن الشويب على فويدى

فقد يزرى الغريم بالكهيل

If a little grayness has come upon my little heart,

little love-torment may indeed bring a little elder low.

ولو عمل الرويهب ثم أبدت

دُليلها لمَالَ عن العميل

Though the little monk labored, if she then displayed

her little coquetry, he would turn from his little labor.

ولو ناغت صريعا في جبيل

لزل لها الصريع عن الجبيل

If she cooed to one lying stricken on a little mountain,

the stricken man would slip from the little mountain for her.

وإن تك لى قويتلةً شجيوا

فكم قتلت عويشقها قُبَيلِى

Though she be my little slayer through little sorrow,

many a little lover of hers has she slain before me.

نبيل لحيظها ماضٍ فشكت

سويدائى بذياكَ النبيل

The little arrows of her little glance are keen; she pierced

my heart's core with those tiny arrows.

عبيلةُ ذَا قُدَ يدك أم غُصين

رديفكِ أم حقيف مِن رُميل

ʿUbayla, is this your little figure or a little bough?

Your little rump, or a little dune of sand?

ضويؤك أم بريقات وهذا

سويقك أم جذيع من نخيل

Your little glow, or little gleams—and is this

your little leg, or a little trunk of a date palm?

رضيبك السويغ أم خمير

أم هوَّ الخويرج من نُحَيل

Your sweet little spittle, or a little wine,

or is it the little yield of little bees?

عبيلةُ لا أزال سويلكا ما

دوينك من حزين أو سهيل

ʿUbayla, I shall keep treading whatever

little rough or smooth ground lies on the way to you.

فما عن وصيلك من صُبير

ولم أكُ بالسويمع للعذيل

For without a little union with you, I have no patience,

nor have I lent even a little ear to reproach.

صليني ياهويجرة أُنيَّا

وميلى عن جويرك للعديل

Come to me, little deserter, for a little while,

and turn from your little injustice toward a little fairness.

وأوفي بالعهيد ولا تكوني

كمَن كانت نويقضة الغزيل

Keep the little pledge, and do not be

like her who unraveled the little yarn.

عبيلةُ هل رويجعة إلينا

لييلات جويمعة الشميل

ʿUbayla, will they ever return to us—

those little nights that gathered our little company?

لييلات تعاقبها زُمَين

يبين خنى فويسقة الجعيل

Little nights succeeded by a little span of time

revealing the obscenity of a little dung-beetle rogue,

ظويلمة الضويرِب والديه

غويدرة الكويذب في القويل

a little oppressor, a little striker of his parents,

a little traitor, a little liar in his little words;

عبيد بطينه وله أهيل

بعيد كالثريا من سهيل

a little slave to his little belly, with little kin

far away, like the Pleiades from Suhayl;

نذيل ذي صويحبة فضاعت

وقد ضاعت وُليدات النذيل

a little wretch with a little companion—she went to ruin,

and the little wretch's little daughters went to ruin.

فَخَيرُكَ يا فويسقُ لستَ تدرِي

فخيرا من فريع أم أُصيل

Your petty boasting, little rogue—you do not know

whether your little boast concerns a little branch or a little root.

فَخَيرك يا مُسَيلمةُ لدَينا

فَخير بالسريقةِ وَالجهيل

Your petty boasting, Musaylima, to us

is petty boasting of little theft and little ignorance.

هميمك في لقيماتٍ فَتُعطَى

لقيمات السويل والطفيل

Your little concern is for morsels, so you are given

the little morsels of petty begging and sponging.

وأنت من الدّنيَّا والأخيرى

رويض بالشريب والأكيل

And from this little world and the little hereafter,

you are content with little drinking and little eating.

ولم تترك فويحشة مضيعا

زمينك في اللعيب وفي الهزيل

You leave no little indecency undone, squandering

your little time in little games and little jests.

فإن يك لي فضيل عنك ضنت

قريش عن نمير بالفضيل

If I have a little merit over you, so too did

Quraysh withhold such little merit from Numayr.

تقاصر فالفضيل لنا فريضٌ

فلا تقسِ الفريضَ على النفيل

Know your limits: our little merit is obligatory.

So do not compare the little obligation with the little voluntary extra.

وَلا تقس القمير على نجيم

وَلا تقس الأسيدَ على شُبيل

Nor compare the little moon with a little star,

nor compare the little lion with a little cub.

ولا تقس البعير في قييد

على القرم الهويدر في الشويل

Nor compare the camel in a little tether

with the noble stud, little bellower among the little dry she-camels.

فما حوت النطيقة مَا بُحيرٍ

ولم تكن الرويضة كالبقيل

No little drop has held a little sea's water,

nor was the little garden like a little herb.

خطيوات القريِّد لا تحاكى

خطيوات الظليم ولا صُعيَل

The little steps of the little monkey cannot match

the little strides of a male ostrich or a little small-headed ostrich.

شميسك قبل أن تك في ضحاها

فالآن دنت شميسك للطفيلِ

Your little sun had not yet reached its morning height;

yet now your little sun draws near its little twilight.

وسوف تُرى مقيريح السويدا

تنادى مِن هجيوك بالوييل

Soon you will be seen with your heart's core a little wounded,

crying little cries of woe at the little lampoon of you.

ألستَ سويرقا مالَ الأيامى

وتعرف بالضعيف وبالذليل

Are you not a petty thief of widows' wealth,

known for petty weakness and abasement?

محيطيط الدريجة من فسيق

مغيلل اليدية من بخيل

Your little rank brought low by petty wickedness,

your little hand shackled by petty stinginess,

مجيبيل القليب على الهوينا

ضييفان في الخصيب وفي المحيل

your little heart fashioned for idle ease,

a little sponger in plenty and in drought.

طريف الدهر أنت له قُذىٌّ

إلى لقيك للأجيل

In Time's little eye you are a tiny speck of grit,

until your little meeting with your little appointed end.

فدونك ذا النظيم فان تجبه

اجِبه في البَحيرِ وفي الفُعيلِ

So take this little verse; if you answer it,

answer it in the little meter and the fuʿayl diminutive form.
