Parting from Umm Aban stripped me of patience,

and fanned love's burning anguish in my breast.

It drove my sighs upward and sent my tears streaming,

as fresh blood upon my cheek, red and fading.

    إِذَا رُمتُمِن جَفني الوِصَالَ جَفَاني

    I spent the night as though I had sheathed a ṣarāʾa [unclear];

whenever I sought my eyelid's embrace, it shunned me.

I groan when remembrance makes my sigh seethe,

and sends it fluttering back and forth within my chest.

As though I were a sheikh harvesting sainthood

on sheer ignorance—he is the foulest sinner.

If you come to him, you meet obscenity from him,

and foul babble, not slowly brewed.

If you turn toward learning, he grows meek, moving

a harlot's fingers through the modes of a lute.

If you ask him for writing, he says arrogantly:

"I was unlettered, exalted in standing.

I inherited from the Hashimite Prophet an inheritance

made complete for me in wishes and hopes."

O our Najdi sheikh, you are a knower,

keen-sighted, gazing into the secrets of error.

News of your threats has reached me—the news

over which you suffer anguish and torment.

So do not think me a coward at the gatherings,

who yields when you rattle old waterskins at me.

For my spear-shaft will not bend if you press it,

nor shatter: it is like a spearhead.

Indeed, a man assailed by poems of mine—

rebuking poems I embellished with my fingers,

and adorned with pearls of meaning, inlaid

    with gems of delightful wordcraft and eloquence;

I drove their flock from the meadow of discord,

    and pastured it on the saʿdān of every pearl;

and filled them with satire, its surface gilded

with the water of praise, delightful in meaning—

is most likely to join me humbly,

abased, and let me lead him by a rein.

For the field is mine in the beauty of its weaving,

and no man has the strength to match me across its reach.

Even the heart of a towering mountain awaiting

my satire can only throb unceasingly.

When I seek to pluck poetry, it brings its clusters

near me, and I gather from it whatever I will.

Its distant parts draw near to me; its rebellious parts submit,

and its eyes gaze toward me in longing.

I have never strained to take hold of it,

for it is merely hidden within my tongue.

Riders recite it to one another in every caravan,

and Fez hurls it to the land of Oman.

Such is my poetry: within it is wisdom,

eloquent wisdom cast into my heart.

I stain a man's honor until it seems

mingled with a blot of ink or tar.

I bring him low after might and high standing,

and place him in abasement and humiliation.

I cast him down in people's eyes, after

they had received him reverently in every place.

He forbade me to satirize al-Masih and his faction—

a noble man, sincere in affection when he forbade me.

And he clothed me in a robe of fine poetry,

through which I surpassed my peers and the people of my age.

He warned me against hatred after affection,

for fear of what leads to enmity.

He is only a sincere adviser; yet I

have been plagued by a laggard, against whom I do not flag.

He threatens me in ignorance, not knowing that

the onrush of calamities steadies my heart,

and that I kindle wars: should it subside—

the blaze of a maiden war—I stoke it with a seasoned one.

Whoever wishes, then, let him guard the gardens of his honor,

for the gardens of honor are the finest gardens.

Otherwise, raging gusts of a howling gale will lay them waste—

a gale of poetry no counterattack can turn aside.
