There was no blame in passing the cup around
For young men whom fellow youths had come to visit.

And when the cup was filled with it, it grew white-haired,
As though blood lay beneath that white hair.

For if drinking from cups were blameworthy,
The high-minded nobles would not have drunk from the cup.

And young men's drinking tea resembling
Wine incurs no blame.

And if he does not obtain it, he is grieved.

The scholar rejoices when it is heated; and if
Its end is decreed one day, the scholar grows feverish.

Longing, sorrow, and worry disappear.

No dark gazelle makes the tea-drinker suffer.

Poetry from him, as the sea overflows.

In abstruse disciplines that none approach.

That tea's merit is great indeed.
