At Muhammad Anjay’s house we made our camels kneel,

And we had counted him among the generous.

We greeted him, but he turned away from us

And did not hasten to return our greeting.

So we were bewildered; it was not long

Before he said, without a smile:

“Was your visit to buy something?”

We said, “No”; he reproached us for coming.

He said, “Do you know my name?” We said,

“Yes, and everything that lies beyond names.”

We said, “People have told us about you.”

    He said, “Leave off so much talk;

There is no lodging for you with us,

Nor is our house a place to stay.”

We said, “Do not blame us; we are under

Your protection—are you not its guardian?”

He said, “The imam of our mosque is responsible

For people like you; I am not the imam.”

We said, “You speak truly”—but he did not know what

We meant, for he is one of the wild asses of the wastes.

He meets whoever meets him with a temper

As coarse as the flints of hard rock,

And a hand that its maker fashioned

    Afflicted with contraction and clenching.

And when he clamored all the more, we said—

With burning embers from him in our breasts—

“Wake from your sleep! We have met with misfortune,

And mankind’s tales have deceived us.

    Yet, of all your hospitality,

It is enough for us that you cease quarreling

And know that we have done no wrong:

Those who spoke of you deserve the greater blame.”

Then I said—and rhymes can bring disgrace

To him whom death’s driver has sought—

“May God curse the base! How often they have ruined

Themselves through shameful failing and disgrace!

How often they withheld rights from their rightful holders,

And never shunned committing what is forbidden!

Indeed, may the Merciful never bless what

The hands of the base have gathered in wealth,

Nor may they encounter mercy from the Merciful,

Nor find peace from the Source of Peace.”
