Muhammad the Madman—whether he tells tales or sings—
If Muhammad the Madman chants or sings,
transports everyone among us, and everyone not of us.
Those among us and those not among us are astounded.

A youth who surpassed every warbler in song;
A youth who surpasses every warbler in song;
when the Sufi hears his melody, we go mad with ecstasy.
When the Sufi hears his melody, he goes mad.
يُذَكِّرنُاhe reminds us صَوتَthe cry الفَصِيلِthe camel calf إِذَاwhen رَغَىbellowed

وَيطرُدُ مَا في القَلبِ مِن كَدَرٍ عَنَّا
He recalls to us the voice of a camel calf when it bellows,
He reminds us of the camel calf's cry when it bellows,
and drives away from us the murk within the heart.
And drives away from us whatever gloom lies in the heart.
