Hear now, brethren, people of good manners,

and people adorned with piety and drawing near to God,

and people of sciences that elders bequeathed

to their juniors, from a worthy man to a worthy man's son.

Indeed, you won widespread glory above all humankind

long ago, and shone in east and west.

So do not think I conceal hatred for you,

reviling you on its account behind your backs.

For I have never shown hostility in secret; my habit

is to make my intentions plain, without [unclear word].

And if I say things about people in their absence,

I say the same before them, present rather than absent.

I did not come to Kayma seeking a position there,

nor prestige by which my own standing might rise.

Nor did I come to speak about any man's religion,

or any woman's; rather, I came there to earn a living.

And I treated its people as enjoined

by Taha the Chosen One's commands on cultivating affection.

I placed you first in my sincere affection,

and drew you closer than every intimate friend.

Even if some people have faulted your religion,

and the fanaticism your views have embraced,

and what is said of your doctrine of divine unity—a co-presence

in essence that contradicts the soundest teaching of every school—

and what your young men and women have pursued

in the way of excess in an unyielding doctrine,

and the mirage you have mistaken for a vast, deep sea,

hoping for draught after draught from it,

and other forms beyond these that have branched out

along every newly devised, branching path—

so do not think I have faulted you; I have not,

by the Khayf of Mina—the very essence of longing—and al-Muhassab!

Nor had I supposed that the [unclear word] of all people

would soften toward you on the side of one who kept aloof,

until you reviled me without cause; and never

before had anyone undertaken to revile me without provocation.

That had indeed been difficult, not easy; before it stood

deterrents that bring ruin to the clever and the foolish.

And indeed I am a man tested in every arena,

and seasoned through training in every company.

    ولَكن قَضَى قَاضِيهِ لِى بالتَّغَلُّبِ

    No humiliation has come to me through my trial;

rather, its judge has ruled that I prevail.

And a man tested in every land is not

like a man on earth who has never been tested.
