سَلاَماً يُحَاكِى طَعمَ صَهبَاءَ قَرقَفِ
Convey from me to the one devoted to grammar and languages
He alludes to meaning through grammar and language
a greeting resembling the taste of tawny wine;
A greeting that resembles the taste of fresh dew
ويَحكِيand echoes أرِيجَthe fragrance of الرندِlaurel والمِسكِand musk عَرفُهُits scent
ويَحكِي أرِيجَ الرندِ والمِسكِ عَرفُهُ
لِطِيبِfor the sweetness of الشَّذَاthe fragrance إِنif لاَحَit appears مِamong الطِّيبِperfumes يُعرَفِit is recognized
لِطِيبِ الشَّذَا إِن لاَحَ مِ الطِّيبِ يُعرَفِ
and its scent echoes the fragrance of laurel and musk;
And its fragrance tells of basil and musk
its sweet fragrance makes it known among perfumes if it appears.
From the goodness of aroma, if goodness shines through
فَمُوجِبُهُso what prompts it أنthat التِّنَاوةَdullness دُجيَةٌa darkness
فَمُوجِبُهُ أن التِّنَاوةَ دُجيَةٌ
تَرِينُoverspreads عَلَىover نُورِthe light of الحِجَاreason لَمhas not تَكَشَّفِcleared away
تَرِينُ عَلَى نُورِ الحِجَا لَم تَكَشَّفِ
What prompts it, then, is that dullness is a darkness
So its implication is that reciting Qu'ran is shady
that clouds the light of reason and has not lifted.
Shows light upon the hijab that has not been unveiled
وَقَدand indeed كَانَthere was فيin التَّمرِينِpractice مُدوِسُa polisher of رَيبهاits doubts
وَقَد كَانَ في التَّمرِينِ مُدوِسُ رَيبها
مِرَاءَmirror (apparently intended) الحِجَاreason تَصفُوgrows clear بِهِthrough it فَتُرِىand so reveals الخفيthe hidden
مِرَاءَ الحِجَا تَصفُو بِهِ فَتُرِى الخفي
And practice has served to scour away its doubts;
And there has been doubt gnawing in exercise
reason's mirror clears through it, revealing what is hidden.
The hijab's contention clears with it, so the hidden is revealed
فَمَاso what اسمٌnoun تَحَلَّىis adorned بِانصِرَافٍwith full declension وَضِدِّهِand its opposite
فَمَا اسمٌ تَحَلَّى بِانصِرَافٍ وَضِدِّهِ
ولَمand not يَكُbe يَعلُوrise عَنabove ثَلاثَةِthree أحرُفِletters
ولَم يَكُ يَعلُو عَن ثَلاثَةِ أحرُفِ
What noun, then, is adorned with full declension and its opposite,
So no name graced with inflection and its opposite
yet does not exceed three letters,
Would be higher than three letters
عَلَىon الفَتحِfatḥa (the a-vowel) قَدindeed ضَمَّcombined البِنَاءَindeclinability مَعَwith البِنَاindeclinability
عَلَى الفَتحِ قَد ضَمَّ البِنَاءَ مَعَ البِنَا

عَلَى الضَّمّش وهو الأصلُ دُونَ تَوَقُّفِ
combining a fixed fatḥa ending with an ending
On fathah it joined the structure with structure
fixed on ḍamma—the original form—without hesitation?
On dhummah which is the origin without hesitation
ابَنَّexplain clearly بِنَاءَاهُits two indeclinable forms بِهِin it معwith صَرفِهِits full declension
ابَنَّ بِنَاءَاهُ بِهِ مع صَرفِهِ
فَلَيسَfor there is no لِكُلٍّfor each سَاعَةٍa moment مِنany تَخلٌّفِabsence
فَلَيسَ لِكُلٍّ سَاعَةٍ مِن تَخلٌّفِ
Explain how it takes its two fixed endings, alongside its full declension;
He structured its structure with it along with its derivation
for none of these is absent even for a moment.
So there is no moment of lagging for each

نُحَاةً ثَقِيلاً مَالَهُ مِن تَخفُّفِ
And it undergoes a substitution that those of old deemed—
And it is alternated an alternation the ancients deemed
grammarians—heavy, with no lightness in it.
A heavy grammar its lightness they refrained
ولَكِنَّand yet نُحَاةَthe grammarians of العَصرِthe age هَذَاthis يَرَونَهُregard it
ولَكِنَّ نُحَاةَ العَصرِ هَذَا يَرَونَهُ
خَفِيفاًlight لهُfor it أهلُthe people of الفَصَاحَةِeloquence تَصطفيselect
خَفِيفاً لهُ أهلُ الفَصَاحَةِ تَصطفي
Yet the grammarians of this age regard it
But the grammarians of this age see it
as light, and eloquent speakers favor it.
As light - for it the eloquent elite are selective
وقَدand indeed جَاءَhas appeared هَذَاthis فيamong الظُّرُوفِthe adverbs مَُخَبَّاًhidden
وقَد جَاءَ هَذَا في الظُّرُوفِ مَُخَبَّاً
فَمَهمَاso whenever تُطَالِعهَاyou study them الجَنَىthe fruit مِنهُfrom it تقطِفِyou pluck
فَمَهمَا تُطَالِعهَا الجَنَى مِنهُ تقطِفِ
And this is found hidden among the adverbs;
And this came in circumstances obscured
so whenever you study them, you pluck fruit from it.
So whatever of its branches the soul samples, it harvests
