And a dark-lipped beloved, beguiling in beauty—
I cared for him, but he turned away and gave me no thought.
ثَنَانيhe turned me away عنfrom هَوَىloving مِنthe one whom كُنتُI used to أهوَىlove
وَألَفُand cherish وانثَنَىand he turned away لَمَّاonce ثَنَانِيhe had swayed me
He turned me from loving the one I used to love
and cherish, then turned away once he had swayed me.

I sought his reins, but he refused and swore
to that effect, and ended by drawing in my reins.
سِنَانُthe spearhead لِحَاظِهِof his glances السَّحرِىِّmagical أمضَىmore piercing

The spearhead of his spellbinding gaze pierces deeper
into the cores of hearts than any spearhead.

He drew near me, and I sought the sweet moisture of his mouth;
it made me forget the wine aged in jars.

عَنِيفٌharsh لاَnot يُقَعقَعُcowed by rattling بِالشِّنَانِwith dried waterskins
A watcher kept me from paying him a visit—
a harsh one, not cowed by the rattling of dried waterskins.

I passed his house and sang as
I passed it: 'Your mercy, O compassionate one!'

Then, when he heard my voice—
a song with the quavering refrain of moans—

he called me secretly through the curtain,
while keeping himself concealed from the watcher.

The joy of his calling me left me bewildered;
I do not know whether he used my name or my honorific.

فَأومَاَthen he gestured وَهوwhile he يَضحَكُwas laughing لِلعَنَانِtoward the clouds
I almost flew with joy and yearning;
then, laughing, he gestured toward the clouds.

so I asked, 'Is that the fruit of Paradise?'

He asked, 'Is there some love for me in your keeping?'
I replied, 'Is anything but love for you in my heart?'
