ياO شيخُsheikh مَنthose whom أوصَيتُمyou charged بضيافتِىwith hosting me
يا شيخُ مَن أوصَيتُم بضيافتِى
عَرَجُواthey ascended بِإكرَامِىin honoring me سَمَاءَthe heaven of عُرُوجهِits ascent
عَرَجُوا بِإكرَامِى سَمَاءَ عُرُوجهِ
O sheikh, those whom you charged with hosting me
ascended, in honoring me, to the heaven of its ascent.
وتَلطَّفُواand were gracious لِىto me فيin المَقَالِspeech واطَّلَعُواand beheld
وتَلطَّفُوا لِى في المَقَالِ واطَّلَعُوا
فيin كُلِّevery بُرجcelestial mansion مِنهُof it سَعدَthe auspicious star of بُرُوجِهِits constellations
في كُلِّ بُرج مِنهُ سَعدَ بُرُوجِهِ
They spoke graciously to me and beheld
in each of its mansions the auspicious star of its constellations.
لكنهمbut they والدهرُwhile Time يركِبmakes ride أهلَهits people
لكنهم والدهرُ يركِب أهلَه
ماwhatever شاءَit wills منof أقتابِهits pack-saddles وسُرُوجِهِand its saddles
ما شاءَ من أقتابِه وسُرُوجِهِ
But they—while Time sets its people
on whichever of its pack-saddles and saddles it wills—
خلطواthey mixed طعامهمtheir food بحوتwith fish يابسdried
خلطوا طعامهم بحوت يابس
وأناand I أعافloathe الحوتfish يومon the day of خروجهits emergence
وأنا أعاف الحوت يوم خروجه
mixed their food with dried fish,
while I loathe fish even on the day it leaves the water.
