Keep company with the saddle and the swift-striding young she-camel

at al-Rabab's dwellings, and weep over the traces.

It is betrayal not to remain at dwellings

where you once dwelt with al-Rabab.

    Remain ever love-distraught, abiding among them;

it is a disgrace upon you not to be love-distraught.

heartsick and bewildered among the dwellings.

Abodes laid waste by the night rains

and dust-sweeping winds, veering and blowing straight.

not one of their inhabitants can you see.

whoever has suffered them in love will not blame me.

[You who reproach me] for love, you stirred in my heart

the anguish of parting and painful torment.

So, regretful, I let go of my love for her,

after I had been al-Rabab's boon companion.

I turned the reins away from her and headed

toward a sickly, debauched, miserly sinner:

unjust, betraying his trust, a base wretch,

    depraved, ignorant, brutal, baseborn,
