And because I have surveyed humankind,

and ridden over the earth, plain and mountain,

it became clear to me that Time has a hand

untouched by palsy when trials come.

    إِنَّهُ يَا جُملُ مَن يَسمَع يَخَل

    So never make light of this;

for, O Juml, whoever hears assumes it true.

And know that on many a dire day,

its jaw agape, baring crooked fangs,

    ablaze with evil, scarcely rivaled

by the day of Siffin or the day of the Camel—

heroes quailed that day, until there turned back

in flight every armored warrior and champion—

I waded through its waves of battle, unarmored,

never swerving from the blows of spears.

And a youth with whom I shared the cup of slumber

    before dawn, amid unmarked wastelands—

he sings today throughout their reaches,

and the fāyīd have a ringing clamor there.

The beholder takes their mirage for milk-giving camels,

wherever the mirage trots and darts across them.

So I swam across the deserts, cutting through the darkness

and night's lingering darkness, on pale, strong-limbed camels,

rushing along, racing one another with us aboard,

like sandgrouse heading for the last water in a seep.

So I gave the caravan stagnant water to drink

from Dhanab al-Sirhan, second draughts and first.

So what we drew up seemed like oil,

and spiders had clothed it in veils.

The bane of honor is falling into desire,

    the people's faintheartedness, when faintheartedness comes;

and slackness in pursuing lofty aims, out of sloth,

is a coffer of humiliation for the masters of sloth.

    فَإِذا ابنُ العَمِّ ذَلَّ المَرءُ ذَل

    Indeed, a man's honor rests with his two paternal cousins;

so when his cousin is abased, the man is abased.
