After your hair has grayed, do you weep at the dwellings,

and does separation from Nawār grieve you,

and kindle in your heart the torment of longing,

whose fire-stick sparks despite all impediments?

Do you shun sleep at lightning's repeated flashes,

while the turtledoves' lament clothes you in heartache?

And do you summon your companions to weep over ruins

where dwelling nearby grew sweet because of the maidens?

The wailing dust-winds erased them, save

hearthstones like doves, or tethering places,

and vessels, ashes, and a stake,

split, that severed the cords of my endurance.

Like retraced tattoo marks was what

the morning and night rains had left of them.

And the maidens captivate you; at dawn depart

the mature Mahri camels bearing them, like ships.

And they rekindle dormant sorrows, until

the heart seems roasted in a fire.

Yes, the women, on the day they departed

in their howdahs, stirred my recollections.

Is it because she visited, despite her far-off dwelling—

Nawār—that tears flow from your eyes,

and your soul abounds in sorrowful sighs,

and your heart is distraught at Nawār's departure,

and your eyelid is ever sleepless with longing,

and your night is dark, its thickening gloom plain?

A shy, dark-eyed maiden captured you; there shines

the freshness of her face, like pure gold.

She has a mouth with spaced teeth; within it,

just after sleep, is mingled wine.

Daisy blossoms remind me of it,

and ʿarar's fragrance recalls its sweet scent.

And she has long, luxuriantly flowing hair,

and the eye and neck of a gazelle apart from the herd.

    Its braids are labyrinths—

    coiled or loose—for combs.

And a soft, supple figure, and a plump forearm,

    clear-skinned, filling its bracelet.

O you with whitened sideburns, leave the maidens!

You have no share among the maidens.

Does the noblest sacred law allow the approach

to a virgin of one with whitened sideburns?

You are not excused in this, nor in

your venturing blindly through dangers in the wilds,

nor in your traversing the wastes, when

night's eyelids have been lined with pitch,

nor in your wearing out swift young she-camels,

facing young she-camels thick at the nape.

Just as there was no excuse for the one who sent us

a lampoon, after loudly crying out,

and after his weeping at Nāh's satire,

and after the weeping of disgrace's widows,

and after he had stood awhile in his assembly,

with tears streaming over his cheeks.

Have you pursued us with satire, when you have not yet

distinguished your night from the day?

You show yourself in song, but whenever we turn

    to poetry, you hide away.

You have no helper from your tribe

    to strengthen your ever-stumbling steed.

Leave poetry: yours is a little tribe

devoid of eloquent and accomplished speakers.

    Listen, clan of Ḥummūh: awake!

For we, the clan of Aḥmad, are like shining stars.

Lions in battle's blaze, life-giving rains

in hardship, a beacon for every night traveler.

    عَزَائِمُنَا مَوَاضٍ كَالشِّفَارِ

    Our reputations among men are burnished bright;

our resolves are keen as blades.

    فَلَم يَعلَق بِهَا رَينُ الغُبَارِ

    Our poetic gifts are clear and abundant;

no tarnish of dust has clung to them.

We collar with rhymes whoever lampoons us,

and we are foremost when rivals compete.

We clothed ourselves in glory, and were not diverted

by the pursuit of wealth from the pursuit of glory.

And in peace, our knee-bands are not untied,

for we possess serenity and dignity.

This, then—while you have broken the covenants,

and have gained every indecency and disgrace.

Blessings upon the Guide, as long as blaze

the fires of longing at the lament of the qaṣārī birds.

Yes, the women's departure, on the day they turned away

in their howdahs, awakened my recollections.

As though you had been denied meeting the cherished one,

Abū al-Anwār, in whom glories gather.

Our young man, ʿAbd, you bear the mark

of your forefathers, and it puts the shining stars to shame.

O ʿAbd, indeed you bear the mark

of your forefathers, and it puts the shining stars to shame.

A light shines in your radiant face,

passed down from your great elders.

If an envious man vies with you out of envy,

and seeks to subject you to abasement and humiliation,

and covets your highest station, and stokes

the blaze of rancor, and openly seeks to harm,

do not reproach, for you adorn assemblies,

a beacon for every bewildered soul and night traveler.

Unbowed by oppression, your virtues spread abroad,

your neighbor honored, your honor protected.

Your very state says to anyone who opposes you,

and whoever follows your course in competition:

You were ʿAbd's rival—do you not know

the virtues of the man you race or rival?

Did you not know that he possesses qualities

before which men of glory faltered?

The humility of one who knows God, pure,

radiant, free of indecency and disgrace.

An ally of noble deeds, the dew of his hands

flows upon his visitors and his neighbor.

He truly took his father's place,

in hospitality and recitation—a host and a reciter.

If you treat him gently, he is sweeter and more delightful

than pure white honey mingled with wine.

Yet to the foe he is the bitterest spurge

and aloe; his blades are dreaded.

A young man whose nature grew tender and pleasing,

and so he became girded with virtues.

for a branch's goodness comes from the goodness of its stock.

and gives generously with his right hand and his left.

May God reward him with the finest recompense befitting

the foremost of the best among the best,

and grant him long life, obeyed and upright,

    upon the true, illumined faith,

through the standing of the Chosen One, the best of creation,

and the standing of his family and companions, the shining stars.

Upon him, from the Throne, the most radiant

blessings, as long as the waves of the seas surge.
