These are quotations grounded in the text of the verses and transmitted tradition.

They drove all others back on their heels and along their trail.

They revealed the truth to us, set in verse and spread abroad.

And truth is the finest thing in verse and prose.

Their letters upon their parchment seem like pearls.

And in their style they are more splendid than pearls.

When we gathered the yield of their consensus as fruit,

Which puts clear tawny wine and heaped provisions to shame,

Our natures, from its overwhelming delight, spat out

Whatever fruit was on the spreading tree of entrusting the matter to God.

Then we journeyed to interpretation, accompanied by

Proofs from the texts of illustrious masters.

When I set the grazing herd of thought roaming in untouched growth

Of their lush meadow, thought's desire was fulfilled.

And I found relief from pasture I had been guarding,

Unwholesome, spurring the unwary into peril.

I drank the [unclear word] of their meanings, and it quenched [unclear word]

My thirst; and I gazed intently at their saʿdān plants.

So I found nothing but the clearly evident text of the Qur’an—

And the Qur’an restrains more than a keen sword of hard steel—

Or supporting evidence from hadith reports traced to their sources,

From Jābir, or from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, or ʿUmar.

Your quotations revealed the wisdom you had concealed,

Inherited from forefathers who were radiant masters.

You have silenced your opponent; today he stands in peril,

Since you attained the victory you had sought.

For if he concedes, he contradicts his innermost thought,

And if he opposes you, he rides the deep sea of peril.

And count me among you: indeed, I stand with you,

In person and in support, in desert and in town.

That said, may what you have gained be blessed—in deeds,

In knowledge, in family, and in lifespan.
