I met the sheikh’s noble sons one evening,

Beside Touba, where the gravelly flats appear,

And where lofty virtues and meanings are clear,

And where faith’s beacon is pied and plainly visible,

And where pure generosity’s spreading trees grow green.

In them shines a gleam of the sheikh’s lightning.

And where birds of goodness appear in auspicious flight,

And the ill-omened birds did not appear to the eye.

So I was certain of what I hoped for when I met them,

And that broad paths to my desire had become easy for me.

Those are my beloved, and the sons of my refuge,

Whenever grim-faced calamities gnaw at me:

    Ali, lofty, of lofty lineage,

And Mahmoud, and Salih, the righteous.

So may the Lord of the Throne bless them and protect them

From the spiteful, tale-bearing foe, should a foe spread slander.
