Was it lightning that flashed through the clouds,
A flash gleamed through the clouds,
or was the veil lifted from Umam?
Or did the veil lift from before me?
فَإنso if يَكit is بَارِقاًa lightning flash فَلَهُthen it has بَرِيقٌa gleam

If it is lightning, it has a gleam
If it was lightning, it had a brilliance
like Umam's face when she lays aside her veil.
Like the face of a leader lowering her veil.

If it was her face, she lent
radiance to the full moon with its flash.
Her glance for an instant the full moon's splendor.

From the drafts of wine that madden.
أُمَامَةُUmama لَوif عَلِمتِyou knew بِمَاof what اعتَرَانيbefell me

Umama, if you knew what befell me
Umaama, had you known what passion grips me
on the morning of parting, from the pain of passionate love,
Since we parted, pain of love,
لماwould not نَأيتنيyou have left me وَصَددَّتِand turned away عنيfrom me

you would not have left me and turned away,
You'd not have avoided me and turned
while my tears poured and streamed.
From me while my tears flow unchecked.
أُحِبُّكِI love you يَاO أُمَامَةُUmama غَيرَexcept أنيthat I

I love you, Umama, except that I
I love you, Umaama, but I
have been afflicted with love for another for a year.
Have been consumed with love for another this past year.
سَقَانيgave me to drink شَوقُlonging for آسِيَةٍAsiya سَقَاماًillness

وهَاجَand stirred أسىًsorrow أمضَّthe most agonizing السَّقَامِillness
Longing for Asiya gave me illness to drink
Yearning for Aasiya has brought me sickness
and stirred a sorrow, the most agonizing sickness.
And sorrow that worsens the sickness.
فَدمعِىso my tears مِنfrom هَوَاهَاlove of her فيin إنسِجَامٍflowing

وقَلبيand my heart مِنfrom هَواهَاlove of her فيin اضطِرَامِburning
So my tears flow freely from love of her,
Thus my tears in concert with my love for her
and my heart burns from love of her.
And my heart afire with love for her.
وقَدand indeed نُبِّئتُI was told أنَّthat لَهَاshe has حَلِيلاًa husband
مُجِيداًaccomplished لاَnot يُكَافَحُis challenged فيin الكَلاَمِspeech
And I have been told that she has a husband,
And I was told she has a husband
accomplished, whom no one can challenge in speech.
Eloquent, beyond reproach in speech.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them تَرَكتُI left لَهُto him هَوَاهَاlove of her

So I told them, “I have left love of her to him,
So I told them, "I leave her love to him,"
for fear of what might bring reproach.”
Fearing blame for what I was attempting.
فَقَالَso he said لَهُمto them تَقَاعَسَhe held back عَنfrom لِقَائِىmeeting me

Then he told them, “He shrank from meeting me,
But he told them, "He hung back from meeting me
and feared me before I reached manhood.”
And used to fear me before I reached manhood."
وأرسَلَand he sent مِنfrom كِنَانَتِهِhis quiver سِهاماًarrows
بِلاَwithout سَبَبٍa cause ِإلىَّtoward me ولاَand no سَلاَمِgreeting
And he sent arrows from his quiver
And he shot arrows at me
toward me without cause, and without a greeting.
Without cause or greeting.
فأخرَجتُso I drew out السِّهَامَthe arrows وكَنتُand I was أدرَىmore aware
بِمَوقِعِof the target of مَاwhat يُحَاوِلُhe seeks باِلسِّهَامِwith the arrows
So I drew out the arrows, and I knew better
So I brought out the arrows, knowing full well
the target he sought with his arrows.
What he sought with those arrows.
فَلَمَّاthen when أنthat أرَدتُّI intended الرَّمىَshooting فِيهِat him

Then, when I resolved to shoot at him,
But when I thought to shoot back at him
with poetry's fire blazing with kindling,
With the fire of poetry blazing hot,
تَذَكَّرتُI remembered القَرَابَةَkinship فَأنثَنَتso it turned بيme
إِلَىtoward تَركِabandoning التَّعَارِضِrivalry والتَّرَامِىand exchanging shots
I remembered our kinship, and it turned me
I remembered we were kin, so I inclined
toward abandoning rivalry and the exchange of shots.
To avoid confrontation and exchange of arrows.
فَأرسَلَso he sent بِالهِجَاءِwith satire ِإلَىَّto me أيضاًagain

وذَلِكَand that فِيهِin it إيقَاظُawakening النِّيَامِthe sleepers
Then he sent satire at me again,
Then he assailed me with invective too
and in that lay the waking of sleepers.
Seeking thereby to wake the sleeping.

Wake from your sleep: you have stirred a deadly snake,
"Awake from your slumber, answer my invective in verse
warned against at seasonal gatherings and in the wastelands.
That forewarns in seasons of verse and gatherings.

Soon there will be spread in your dwelling—full of abuse—
It will spread in your haunts though it violate
in haste, rhymes like stones.
Proprieties, on racing she-camels swift as arrows.

If you are fit for poetry, compose from it

Uniform pearls with well-ordered composition.

You'll be among the dead from the horsemen's arrows."

Answer me! I will make you drink your own invective,
burning heat does not relieve parching thirst.
And vitriol does not heal vitriol!"

Beware saying I am no match,
for I am the equal of every valiant young man.
For I match any noble hero.

In my lineage, repute and soul
there is a standing that falls short of no other.
I have a station that falls short of no other station.

My bones are strong, I am peer
to be measured in boasting by my bones?
To my peers when boasting of bone.

If our talents are put to the test, there will appear
before us the blunt blade, distinct from the keen sword.
To our assembly the reality from the swords.

It has become clear to me that you are no noble man,
You seemed to me lacking in freedom
because you squandered the virtues of the noble.
Because you neglected the traits of nobility.

You try to be without being an elder,

As if waking while asleep.

Who has not learned any station of the stations.

To be counted among the tall and sturdy.

But you had no interest in sublime things.

You bite the bit when a meal appears,
so restraining you from it with the bridle is hard.
So it's hard to hold you back with the bit.

And taught you from every drinking trough.

so low and lofty alike have tired of you.
So you were filled by every lowly blot.

For their places have become abodes of destruction.

Perhaps you tripped and my words have tended
“May you rise again!” will draw you toward the goal.
To pull you to your purpose.

After investigating the pedigrees.

Others called you the bane of mankind.

And if you aim at noble deeds, you will not hit them,
If you seek glories you'll not obtain them.
for noble deeds have a guardian against the likes of you.
The likes of you is too unsteady for glories.
يَعِزُّis difficult عَلَيكَfor you رَمُيكَهَاyour shooting at them ومَهمَاand however
رَمَيتَyou shoot فَرَميَةٌthen a shot مِنfrom غَيرِone who is not رَامِan archer
Shooting at them is hard for you; however
You scarcely have the strength to shoot at them, yet,
you shoot, it is a shot from no true archer.
Shoot them however much, your shooting goes astray.

So take it—a diver's pearl that dispenses
So take this pearl from a diver; it will substitute
with a lamp amid the depths of darkness,
For a lamp in the gloom of night,
وتُوقِدُand kindles فيin الحَشَاthe breast حُرَقاًburning pains وتُندِىand moistens

and kindles burning anguish in the breast, and moistens
And kindle in desolate places burning coals,
the one it collars, like the neck-rings of doves.
Girdled like bracelets of a dove.
