O you who have made the Lord’s pleasure your trade,

and sold your pearls and your dwelling for it.

And one mark of yours among people is that you

are not spoken of, though your authority is great.

    Easygoing, gentle, pure-bred, discerning masters—

wine, once diluted, was a metaphor for you.

O you who, when people feared failing their pledge of protection

to those they sheltered, fulfilled your own pledge of protection.

The wisest curved-horned ibex atop a towering peak longs

to be your neighbor, whether male or female.

Indeed, I have long loved you, and I praise you,

and, if you signal to me, I heed your signal.

Nor do I count on anything against a sudden, grave terror,

so long as I can find you, except a visit to you.

Nor do I express what I have come to you for

except through you; so understand my expression, ‘how much.’
